1st time @ Autumn Oaks....What do you recommend

Ok - so this will be our first year ever going to AO. For some of you who have been year after year......what do you recommend we do? I mean what are some of the things that are MUSTS to do and see while we are there. I have been told there is no way to see it all so what is the most important or best stuff to make sure we get in. Of course I will have Taylor with us and she is 11 so we want to keep her entertained after the bench shows!!

Thanks! Priscilla

ice cream for sure! and if you are staying in a hotel get a room where you can take your dogs to keep them cool.

If you are camping, take coolers with blocks or big chunks of ice to keep the dogs cool and bring shade for them.

I really need to go to the Kentucky state hunt , because the Michigan state hunt is NO WHERE THE SIZE OF A.O. as far as venders and people that are just there to pick up hunting supplies! Oh yeah the ice cream is VERY GOOD!!!

The ice cream man usually has a booth set up between the vender barns. He makes their own waffle cones and they are great. I usually eat 1 or 2 there and get 1 for the road as I'm leaving.

Compare

It can be compared to Grand American. About the same with dog traders, vendors, and events. You'll do a lot of walking, BUT if you are showing dogs all 3 days, get ready to miss a lot. The shows are a major part of the day, and when you're done you're ready to relax and keep the dogs comfortable. I've been there when its terribly hot, and other years very cool.

The vendors buildings are all in a general area, so if you're shopping you can hit all of them. What is however spread out... will be the dogs for sale, puppies for sale, and breeders promoting stud dogs. That's where the walking comes in to play.

The ice cream and smoked pork chops are the favorites! You'll see rows and rows of campers, tents, RV's with dogs tied every where around it, pens of puppies, golf carts, 4-wheelers.

Parking this year will be a major issue for the show folks. In years past you could park around the Tom Raper Building. This year its being taped off for UKC use. This will force a lot of campers to move. Pushing to the back field. Which has very little shade.

You'll need to have your own shade. So if you have a pop up and fans to keep a breeze on the dogs bring it!

Looking forward to finally getting to meet all of you. Have a safe travel northward!

Ok so we gotta eat ice cream and pork chops - any activites we want to make sure to take in? Only taking 2 dogs so not much worry there - I already have sitters lined up for them pretty much all day. Just need to make sure we don't come home and find out there was something we should have seen or done! There will only be one 50th Anniversary, right?

IF YOU ARE THERE TO HUNT, I RECCOMEND YOU HAVE A PLACE SET UP WHERE YOU CAN SCORE ABOUT 2000+ POINTS IN 120 MINUTES. LOL

Nope - no hunting for us! Not this year anyway! Taylor is planning to hunt in the Ga State Youth Hunt this year as her 1st event! I am excited to see what kind of scores get turned in!

the really fun stuff, besides hunting, is just walking around and seeing all the dogs and people and hunting stuff. You can get right up and pet all the dogs youve been hearing about, If there's any particular dog you want to see, just ask around and someone will know where it is parked for the day.
There's usually a fair number of people that bring musical instruments and play in the evenings, so if you arent hunting, keep an ear out for that and bring an instrument yourself if you play.
It is really easy to get confused about show times, entry times etc When you first get to the fairgrounds, make sure you doublecheck when your class and breed are scheduled. The grounds are huge, and there are more dogs and people and clamor than its possible to imagine beforehand, so keep track of time, make sure you have enough time to get your dog ready, then make sure your dog and you dont become nervous wrecks waiting to show because everything is behind schedule.
the ice cream is good but it is not cheap. there are a lot of temptations to spend money, even if its only ice cream and t-shirts. You will be surprised at all the novel hound stuff for sale and can spend a fortune if you don't pay attention! You many not think you need a new dog box or hunting light before you go, but when you see all that STUFF--the beautiful harness leather show lead, the premium brand dog food because you forgot to bring a bag of Old Roy with you, etc--it adds up real fast!
