Breed em' on their first cycle if you want .... fifteen months and getting it done would be plenty for me .

when to breed

I never claim to be the smartest guy on the block and I learn more every day about myself,my family and my dogs but I think everyone knows a dog is not at full maturity until they reach 1 1/2 years old some even 2 year old and depending on the dogs health and physcial condition and when her heat cycle falls I wouldnt even concider breeding until she is 2 years old
I know you may like her and want pups off her but remember they make more almost every day I also think if you like her now you will LOVE her more when she is fully mature and all the puppy is out of her
I had a similar situation and regret it now 1st she wouldnt nurse the pups we had to bottle feed 9 pups every hr NO FUN WHEN YOU GET UP at 5am for work Then my gyp got MEAN like rattle snake MEAN
Good luck with what ever you choose to do

I tell you I have never liked to breed a female until they are at least 18 months old minimum. I know others may disagree but I found that female and the pups are much more healthier when waiting a few extra months.

some people say at 6m, but would you breed at 6m...just because its a coon dog???

as stated earlier, you have to wait until the dog is mature enough to handle being a mommy and all that come with it. i know some dogs never do, but the older they are, the better chance you have with the pups.

breeding early because its a coon dog is like getting a child prodigy pregnant becuase they are so smart and you want to pass that on. they are a child and do not know what to do.

the saying 'babies having babies' can also be applied to dogs that are too young to handle the stress of motherhood as well..

there is no such thing as a 6 month old 'coondog'. You can have an exceptional young hound that knocks your socks off, but the one thing that any dog has to have to be a true coondog is experience along with hours on top of hours on top of hours of hard hunting, and that takes a lot more time than 6 months...

Posted by trappin_girl on 06-10-2009 07:01 PM:

i wouldn't neccisarily say that blue style, i have had 2 'coondogs' at the age of 6 months old culd take pressure, accurate tree, great kill dogs, mom and bunch of cubs, water, lay-up, they were coondogs then and know. one of them is 3 and the other is 7. one treed first coon at 11 weeks old, the other at 3 months. so ya i dont wanna hear 'you caint have a 'coondog' at 6 months old because YOU CAN!!!

Make sure she is a coon dog first then I would breed her so she has pups in the spring so you can hunt her in the fall and winter.I try to wait until they are 2 years old before having first litter. It doesn't always work that way but at least wait until she is a coon dog.

I have a 7 mth old sitting in the pen now I take occasionaly with me dogs just don't start that early and if you had one tree a coon at that age it was really chasing a biscuit because maybe one in a 1000 are mature enough to start at 6 mths because if not they will just have bad habits

My belief is not before 24months of age.Coonhounds on average are not done growing before 2years of age.Pups will be taking nutrition from her that she needs to finish maturing.

alot of things say on there 3rd heat cycle, which is usually around 2 yrs old.
I wouldn't want to breed anything that was under a year no matter what they're doing, otherwise to me it just depend on the dog and what its doing in the woods.
