Day time coons.

Does anyone hunt coons during the day? I've seen alot of pictures of hounds treed during the day. Just wandering. I've never tried it.

You bet, but mostly just in Dec and Jan. This is hunting!

When I still lived in Montana we used to go coonhunting in the afternoon in the middle of winter, when it had been real cold, if it was overcast the coon's would often be moving. We only did that in the really cold stretches of winter.

Thanks for the responces. I've never tried it. Living in the mountains of east tennessee we are over welmed with copperheads and timber rattlers. I have 2 young pups I'm tring to get started. Sence the weather has warmed up I don't get in the woods as much. I can't stand snakes and really don't want to put my dogs in harms way. I don't want them sitting on the chain for 6 months either. I have been thinking about taking them out during the day. Just didn't really know if coons were out running during the day or not.

I have hunted for over 30 years in states that have more snakes than East Tennessee. In those years I have had ONE dog bit by a snake and can count on one hand, the poisonous snakes I have ran into.

By some good snake boots and carry some basic first aid kits for your dogs and hit the woods.

I went mushroom hunting about a week ago on a Sat afternoon and took the dogs with me just to let them get some exercise. They treed a lay up coon down in a swamp at about 3 in the afternoon!

I don't know how much our coons are actually out running during the day. Most of the time the dogs go into the briars and run them out of their beds.

daylight hours

I have set the alarm to get up a couple of hours before sun up and have hunted till daylight, I have treed coons at day break that way. But I have never casted a dog in the sun light time. I have only seen one coon hear in Oklahoma during the day time, I was guessing a coyote had jumped it up or some thing, It had ran across the road in front of me on a hot summer day....

I have seen a ton of coons in the middle of the day while fishing myself, never hunted in the daylight though.

Took my sons pup out for a little while today. He never set treed but something had him all jacked up. He got to running back and forth between 3 different trees. Never seen anything? He enjoyed getting off the chain and I enjoyed letting my son get in the woods with him.

This time of year is a great time to let pups go a few hours before dark when mommy and the kittens are down feeding in the early evenings...

Here in Iowa

We do most of ou rhunting during the night. I have found that they tree more coon form 2 to 5 in the mornin than 10 to 2 at night. But I have free cast dogs during the day time and treed coon. I took a couple out and turned loose at 2 pm and at 2:15 they had a coon treed.
