Have a question about the coloring of my coonhound pup..

Hello,
I just purchased a "redbone" coonhound pup from a woman yesterday..I saw the mother dog who was obiously a red..and she said the dad was a red as well but he got out of his pen and got hit by a car a few weeks before..anyway, all the puppies in the litter were red except for the one that I got (that was black and tan coloring) she said in the previous litter there were 2 that were black and tan as well...and she thinks that that coloring must run in the lines up in the grandparents or something...

she said both the parents were reds..all the puppies were reds except for mine, so is he still considered a red even though his coloring is different?

Thanks!

Sounds kinda strange to me.... there's obviously a BnT mixed in somewhere in your pup's breeding.

It is a recessive gene that is coming through.. It happens in the breeds upon occasion. ... He is still a "redbone" but I am sure that he can't be registered because that is not a color standard for that breed.

COMMON...

... or not rare... to have BnT colored pups from redbones. It is just a throwback to old breeding. Go over to the redbone forum and you will find info on this. You can ask your question over there and get more answers.

Enjoy your new pup! HappyHunting! Heather&Bob

redbone pup

judgeing according to the breed history of the redbone the coloration is red and in old blood redbones had white markings on the chest. Now somewhere back in time a redbone of that bloodline could have very easily been crossbred with a black -n-tan or bloodhound to freshen up the blood or to give the body of the offspring more bulkiness or more of a colder nose. but to particepate in shows that coloration is not perciple.

josh this is a old grade dog 1/2 lemon spotted cur
1/2 redbone that placed 2nd around 1966 redbone days

The old man who I started coonhunting with always had a fancy for what he called saddleback redbones. According to him thats what the old redbones looked like, or at least it was a very common color. Think redbone with a walker blanket on there back.

His dogs always threw one or two in a litter as well as one here and there that were kind of a steel blue color.

the dog on the far left is a littermate to the black dog

all of these redbones are from mercer co. and turpin
was from boyle co.

I got a buddy that got one thats the same way... Its a blanket backed redbone. Black blanket and the rest is red.. 2 in this litter were born that way.

Posted by Kevin Jackson on 01-17-2008 07:47 AM:

A lot of redbones today still have white on them. One of the nicest looking black and tan pups I ever saw was out of two registered redbones. My buddy had a dog that looked like a purebred black and tan that was half redbone and half bluetick. I have seen a lot of pups with black saddles like Josh describes and like he said it usually fades and you end up with a dark red colored dog. As far as registering the dog as a redbone you can't, it won't fit the breed standards. Redbones throwing black and tans happens more than most realize.

this is more common than most redbone folks want to admit, i would like to say if it is black and tan more than likley it will stay black and tan(for sure if it has the pumpkin seed over the eyes)any redbone person that has bred several litters has more than likely seen one. they are usally culled or given away as pets in most cases, i asked a ukc rep once at redbone days if i could hunt a black and tan (redbone) even though it proved dna that it was from 2 red colored parents and was told you shouldn't even register the pup(gave one away to a hide hunter and dog was a nice hound at a young age(no papers))(in fact it was a littermate brother to the female below) some strains of redbone seem to throw more than some of the others strains, i would say the more line bred or the one that haven't mixed in outside blood will tend a better chance of black and tan. of course this is all just my opinion.

for bred right kennels the black traces back to a male we owned named ch.nt.ch. lucking's kn. lake trooper(he was heavy timber chopper bred) the female below is a grandaughter to him, her last litter to date which was of 5 had a black and tan in it. the pups are 3 times trooper.

Black and tan

It is like a bloodhound. Alot of their puppies come out like that. Surely you can still register it with ukc just maybe be a disqualification for bench shows.

That bloodhound comparison is an excellent point. I've seen red ones and black saddle back ones myself.

On the Redbones, I've seen Black & Tans come from them. I mean Black dogs, not saddlebacks. What someone called a saddleback redbone is pretty much what I call a saddleback Black & Tan. Seems to me that either is right, as we're describing the same coloration.

At one time, ACHA registered these dogs as American Saddleback Black & Tans. They were considered as a separate breed in ACHA. I remember in the 70's, there were a couple guys from Tennessee (Murfreesboro?) that advertised these hounds. It's been a long time since I've seen one of these, but I have seen some Walkers that look a lot like the old saddleback hounds.

My first coondog was a "hightan". Sire and Dam was GR.NT redbones. Old man from SE MO named Larry Wise gave him to me. Would buy ten just like him today!!! One of the best dogs Ive ever followed to this day. His daddy was GR.NT.CH.Wise's Ozark Hutch. memories right there!!!!!!!!!

Black Stripe on back of Redbone pup

I also have a question about coloring on a puppy. We are looking at a redbone puppy with a black stripe on his back. Will that go away as he gets older?

Litter of 10 Redbone pups-3 were B&T-these were not saddle back, but full colored B&T. They stayed B&T in color also.

This is a pic of one of the red pups when she was about 6 months old. I really need to go get a pic of one of those black pups for reference on this litter...

I think that it is safe to say that in "some" bloodlines the black will not completely fade...On the other hand it may completely fade. Only time will tell.

So far in all of ours except the about B&T colored pups most all of the black has faded. We have a litter now that is out of two dark red parents. This is a second cross on this litter. Both litters had lots of dark masking on their faces. With the first litter, they all lost most of the black on the face and ears and were beautiful dark cherry to mahogony reds from head to toe. Well, with an exception of a couple small white spots on a couple of chest and a few toe nails. The prettiest female pup from the first cross had more white on her chest.

It will stay B&T in color and CAN NOT be reg with UKC. At least not as a Redbone. It's a pretty common thing.
