Pictures of a Pup's First Tree

I have been hunting my male pup out of Jewel and Razor Ridge DUI a little bit, and he started out like his mother did--a screaming track dog with a lot of go and not much stop.

But last night his tree switch flipped on.

I heard him throw a couple of big locates and go to treeing.

I snapped a few pictures of him and thought someone might enjoy a couple...

Like his mother, his forst solo tree was one he got off by himself and made.

She was the same way when the light came on for her and she decided to become a tree dog.

The difference with this male pup is that he was locating off the wind, and his mama doesn't do that.

I am liking him so far.

Here he is on the bench a while back:

The only drawback on this old pup is that he may wind up being a tad big to put on the bench, not that I am much of a bench show man anyway, but he may outgrow the height limit. He is a big, stout son of a gun. An athlete though, so I don't really care. I prefer one that looks like a hound.

Thanks, Murph.

I like him so far.

I've always had a fondness for a big, leggy hound that is houndy but still athletic.

That's the kind I try to raise.

Thanks. Voyd.

These pups are about ten months old now.

He is really lamkier than the pictures show. He is pretty tall, but has a real deep chest allong with it.

From what I have seen so far, he is showing a pretty good combination of traits from both his parents.

He is gaited like DUI--moves and gets around just like his daddy.

He runs a track in the same style as his mother, but winds like his daddy.

Nice looking young hound, John. A hound that has the ability to wind will flat spoil a person.

Mike, he is doing a great job. I let Gary talk me out of him, and kind of regret it.

Great looking dog, but I thought that before when you just had pictures on the bench. Now that he is beside that tree, he looks DOUBLE good.

John does the wind ever blow around your house. How is midnight doing now. I took Doc to his first comp. hunt ( just a club hunt, doesn't count toward UKC points) He smoked all the other dogs, and won the hunt. Sure making a good dog. Thanks again for selling him to me. I would be in the market for a female pup out of his mom if you have any more come along. There is a good male dog here if you are ever looking for something to breed to. I can't remember his breeding, but he is sure enough a good coon dog. He belongs to a friend of mine that I hunted all fall and late winter with. Never made a slick tree all year.

Hey John, I still ain't mailed out those pictures but I'll get them to you. Built just like mine. He stays gone a little longer every night I let him out to play. I have a feeling one of these night I'll be walking to a tree. Very athletic and a very good disposition. I like him.

Old Belle has been dead for years.

I assume you mean Jewel?

I have never leased a female out, and probably wouldn't be interested in doing so, at least not in the foreseeable future.

As of now, I am probably going to breed her to old Pop A Top this fall when she comes in heat.

A top female only has so many litters in her, and the way Jewel is bred and with the way her pups are working, I plan on making a few very carefully selected crosses with her with a view toward keeping myself and a buddy or two in breeding stock for years to come.

I also like to hunt her too well to want to just breed her to death.

Thanks for asking, though, and if you are interested in a pup when I breed her next I will sure put you down for one.

One out of her and Pop a Top would be a dandy to cross back in on Doc.

I don't think she can have any more pups Mike. I sure wish she could.

I bred her the last time she came in and she didn't stick.

She only had two pups in her last litter, and wouldn't nurse them.

Three C-sections in a row in consecutive heat cycles...right at 12 years old...I am afraid she is done having babies.

I have her loaned out to a man and his teenage son. She is training them and their pup in the fine art of treeing coons.

The first night they took her out down on the river, they called me the next day to tell me she ran one down and caught it on the ground. they were shocked that an old dog could run like that.

She has been a dandy, and I hate to see her get old. But they all do it.

I am just tickled that I have a sure enough good young daughter of hers coming on now. I call her Judy.

As for Midnight, her mouth never did come back to suit me, and she is in the hands of some young hunters Austin knows.

If she ever comes in heat, we are going to breed her to something decent and see how it works.

Her and Doc's littermate sister is bred right now.

If you are interested in something out of that cross, I can get you in touch with the man who has her.
