Rule Suggestion (Youth)
I have been to alot of youth hunts and I have seen little kids in the age group from 5-12 get scratch for there dogs tree a opossum just 5mins into the hunt. I would like to see UKC change this to minus and let the little ones enjoy what they come to do and that is HUNT, not go back to the club and say I didnt even get to hunt.
i think they should do a division just like 5-8 or something for the little kids to just go out there and have fun.
I mean 5 and 12 year old shouldn't be together. Whats the chance of the 5 year old winning?

is the age cut off for youth 18? I've never been around a youth cast or hunt, so i dont know for sure, but a 5 year old huntin dads dog shouldnt compete against a 17 year old.

If you would read the youth hunt results you would find out that as many young children win as the older ones. I have been to alot of youth hunts and have had a lot of fun and I also think the way that it is set up is working and every one that I have been to seem like all the children have fun and enjoy it and that is what it is all about.
oh i didnt know that there was 2 div. or youth. yea...has a youngster like that ever won a big youth hunt? I think I'll be huntin in the Indiana Youth state champ. this year. not sure.

My son won IL ST. Championship when he was 10. Trey Perrin from AL. has won a ton of hunt before he was ever 10. Winning the hunt is not the deal here it the time you spend in the woods with you young one weeks before the hunt, that is the true reward.

Its not the idea of a you thinking that a 5yr old is goin to win.. Its giving him/ her the chance to keep on hunting if there dogs trees a opossum in the hunt.
I see your point
but what would happen to a night Ch that treed a grinner then won the hunt would they get a win for grand when the rulls state night ch are to be scrached. would be a good way to work a non broke dog around the rules. But i see your point I hate to see a Kid who wants to hunt not get to. JMO

i have to agree with givin the younger group alittle more leway but in the same aspect if they do that then there would be no way of them being able to get champioship points for treein off game and my daughter is like MARK V. son or TREY PERRIN they both started earlier than her but i have to agree with MARK V. the time in the woods with ur child to me is the most rewarding and yes if they win that makes it better but the time spent in the woods with a child is where all the excitement comes from

Rule Suggestion (Youth
Some of you on this site said that a 5 year old can not win. When me son was five in 2001 he won the Texas State Youth Hunt. He started hunting with me when he was 18 months old. I don't any thing wrong with rules to change age group.
Most 5 year olds probably can't handle against a 12 year old and come out on top, but some will. Some will have daddy poking them on the shoulder at critical times....
If a 5 year old can't call his dog, and it trees possums, then he needs to do more preparation BEFORE he comes to a hunt. He can hunt all night on those nights, getting prepared.
Don't mess it up for those that do come prepared.
Also, the adults behind these hunts need to use a little more sense sometimes. If you set a kid up with a dog that will tree a possum and it ruins some 5 year old's night, its YOUR fault, not the rules.
I saw a kid get scratched for not calling his dog one night. The judging was lenient, but at some point it became obvious there was a problem. It turned out someone sent the kid out with a dog they'd never heard before.

It would just plan suck for those little kids out there that go and get scrached for off game at the first of the hunt. No dog is completly broke! They broke when there dead and gone.
Why not let them continue hunting but if they win the cast the dog does not get its champion points for getting into off game ???

i agree they should either make a seprate group ages 5-8 and antoher 9-12. this would make it were they could have more fun doing this. or they could change the rules for the 5-12 age group.

Hate to say it but there's just as much cheating going on in youth hunts than any other. Dad want to get that last easy win on ole so and so......
OK son/daughter dont tree that dog until I light up a cigarette or take my hat off or look at my cell phone or ..................
or heres another one 10 minutes into the hunt all the kids have 300 minus cause they are calling dogs to fast or striking the wrong dog and judge says lets start over. Heard that before.

why not teach the kids of the next generation to let the dogs do the work. call them for what they do and forget about the slick handleing..bring some honor back into the honor system..ive always said and will say it again if someone dont cheat you,it dont matter how old you are you got a chance at winning..if you do it that way you can have some leeway on calling the dogs and such if they arent sure its their dog ask them and give them a chance to be sure instead of making them pitch their dog.. the handlers are the problem with all the hunts today it isnt the dogs doing all the bickering and cheating..
