2012 Wisconsin "hide" Season

The season is fast approaching, 23 hours away, but who's counting...

Everyone have a safe time out there and have fun. I'm very excited for this season as I have a lot of newbies who want exposure to the "sport", both in dogs and humans. I think one of my greatest rewards this time of year is returning the favor my mentors did for me when I was growing up, (mainly my Dad), and getting new people out there at night to show them what it's all about. With any luck there'll be some youngsters pestering their parents for a coondawg pretty soon.

Also the purpose for this thread, is let's see some smiling faces and slobberin mouths in the form of pictures!!!

Getting my gear in order now. Dogs are ready. Fresh straw in the box, cleaned the ruger, sharpened the knives and filled the truck .
I'm going to a new spot down by Mount Horeb. Then over to two spots by Madison. Then maybe a one more spot depending on the time.
May the coons be moving
Our dogs be straight
and our rifles shoot true.

We got four coon, and we were back by 2:00 a.m. because we're going to our son's flag football game this morning. One coon was a black one. It's pretty cool looking, but he's wet because Ike caught him in the creek. Hopefully he'll dry ok because that would be a cool hide to tan and save.

We have 18 so far: 4 opening night, 8 Saturday, and 6 last night. We normally don't kill so many, but for the past couple of years, we haven't taken more than about 60 total. We were selective about shooting them out. Unfortunately the farmers who's land we hunt on have been complaining about too much damage, etc. They told us we better thin them out or they'll get someone else to hunt it. So the pressure is on! Poor Ike is getting his legs worn off with hunting hard and training the pups. It's raining tonight so we may take the night off.

I have no idea what you're talking about sir. Lately the camera has been replaced by the .22. And its getting used as much as my camera usually is. I've been hunting a friends dog, been selective on what gets harvested and give it a little bit so the hides are worth harvesting. I'm getting my much needed excercise and look forward to getting to the woods with my usual friends. I made it over to Fennimore on saturday night and had a good time with Matt & Alex Downing. Otherwise the other 2 nights I've hunted around my place and I think I've taken 7 so far.

SKUNKED!

Tonight wasn't what I was hoping for as far as coon seen, but my young male has been getting progressively better each night. Tonight I wasn't able to find a coon. The only tree they made that wasn't a den or a hole, I couldn't shine because of the dense fog. Since my hands were clean, I decided to take a picture.

Here's Bentley treed on a den for the last tree of the night.

Took my 10 year old daughter out tonight in a crappy foggy mess. Had 1 empty tree. At least I think it was empty. Had to be an oak full of leaves at the top which didn't help. Dog wasn't convinced it was empty, though...
