UKC Hunts
I'm looking for a little direction or advise on how the UKC hunts work. As a long time pleasure hunter I have never attended a UKC Nite hunt. Here recently, after getting out of hunting for a couple of years due to other obligations. When I started back hunting I bought an older finished dog, no barn burner but would tree a coon and only had very minimal faults. I also bought a pair of pups and raised them up and started both, I kept the one that I liked best. I'm starting to single her out and hunt her solo. Here recently I've kicked around the idea of trying to put her in some local hunts this in a couple of more months once she gets more experience. As I said before, I don't know much at all about how the hunts work other than you hunt in cast of 4 and points are awarded for striking first and treeing first along with minus points taken away for faults. Is there anywhere on this site that I could search and read a quick over view of rules or something to get a better understanding of how the hunts work. The last thing I want to do is go somewhere and not have a clue whats going on and cause a big mess. Any advise anyone wants to offer up would be greatly appreciated. Where to look for rules and regs, past experiences, how things work, or just a simple stay home until you figure it out. Thanks in advance
Read this, over and over and over.

You will never figure it out by staying at home. Just go to your local hunts. You might be surprised to learn that about half of the guys there don't really know what is going on. And the ones that do know still remember when they started. So it shouldn't bother them to answer any questions as they go along. I answered/explained a bunch just this past Sat night. You can also get a scorecard with the rules printed on the back. Just read those rules and observe how they are used or not used during the hunt.
The way I read the rules is: No use of tracking devises? What is dogs are nearing a road or getting close to posted land?
Re-read the rules about tracker use or go to a hunt and ask questions.
You'll learn a lot more through experience, but looking over the rule book and back of the scorecard consistently is always a good idea as well. Joey posted the link to the scorecard above, so I'll post the link to the rule book

Or just call Krystal personally and ask her. It sounds like she knows what she is talking about.
Excuse me.....as I said, you won't look like an idiot, and you won't cause a mess. And asking questions on this board won't always get you the correct answer. Apparantly you can't tell what someone is saying on this forum.
Thanks

Just don't call Krystal personally and ask her. She never seems like she knows what she is talking about and surely does not know near as much as the rest of us on this board.![]()

See I told y'all. If anyone needs Krystal's personal cell # just text me and I will text it back to you.
You could just go to a few hunts and spectate that way you can see how they work.

Richard, you have more nerve then I do, talking about Krystal like that. Your next litter of puppies may be 2 years old before you get your papers back. LOL!

Oh I know who is in charge of the registration dept. She is a super nice young lady who is very good at her job. I for sure couldn't say anything bad about her. Krystal is in field operations, she has to put up with us coonhunters.
Best advice is to go spectate on a couple of casts. Read the rules before you go. And when there's a timeout or the hunt is over ask questions like, why was this scored this way and not that way kind of deal. Or if you're not a member of your club become one. See if they hold buddy hunts. Which is a good way for you to learn the rules without paying the entry fee. If you think you're ready for the hunts take a stop watch with you the next time you pleasure hunt. Hunt according to the rules and times. Keep score and see how your dog stacks up against its self.
