I love to fish...I have 4 nice ponds on my place. A few years back you could go to either one of them and catch some nice 3 pound bass or all the black crappie and bluegills you wanted. In the last 2 years it seems like the bass are stunted...every now and then I would catch one that was 5-6 pounds, even caught one once that was almost 9, but not in a good while.
I thought the crappie might be stunting the bass as they do compete for the same food. Then, last year the crappie fell off. About every fourth or fifth fish I would catch had a big scar.
I got some watermen from eastern shore to come over and set turtle traps. Now, these are all like 6 to 10 acre ponds. They set 6 traps each in 2 of the ponds and caught 43 big mean nasty snapping turtles the first night!!!! Rest the traps and caught 7 more out of those same two ponds. These guys do this for a living...they said snappers are bringing $1.25 a pound. That first haul was just shy of 1500 pounds....no more wondering where the fish went!!!!
Set the other two ponds last night, I will post what the catch is this afternoon. Absolutely ridiculous!!!!

Wow!!Ive had them snapping turtles try and eat my fish right off the stringer. They don't play around.

Posted by yadkintar on 05-17-2015 02:14 PM:

That snapping turtle is good eating but I like soft shell turtle the best.

Posted by msinc on 05-17-2015 06:17 PM:

I have tried snappers and it's not bad, but not worth the effort to catch and clean one to me. Now if someone gave me the meat ready to cook...I wouldn't turn it away. I have heard that those soft shelled ones are better eating, but we don't have them around here.
The second set netted 18 more, all huge. It's hard to believe that many big turtles were in these ponds. It's a wonder there are any fish left.

Posted by Jackson87 on 05-17-2015 09:56 PM:

Them turtles are huge!I bet they at Alot of fish.We had a good camping fishing trip this weekend.Caught 7 channel cats,1 bass and a bunch of huge bluegills.Heres a pic of my 2 year old son Lucas catching bluegills.

Posted by msinc on 05-18-2015 01:33 AM:

Now there is a professional fisherman...only a true pro would catch bluegill with a lure!!!! He's probably a future bass pro and no doubt better than I am right now. I usually take 4 rods with me...just to get in about 10 minutes worth of fishing before I tangle up every one of them.

Posted by Jackson87 on 05-21-2015 04:05 AM:

Thanks. He has a hard time leaving his bobber still.Thats why I put the jig on there. He caught a bunch of them big bluegills.Shame it was catch and release.

I've catfished on the eastern shore my whole life. As a kid I'd all the time catch snappers catfishin. We'd grab em up by the tail and ride our bikes over to my friends house cause his dad made the best turtle stew.

Ok guys!!

Been doing some crappie fishing and it's been good. What I want to know is how can one cook them so the meat stays moist and flakey or does it not cook up that way. Caught some slabs,13" to 15 " and now I need to learn how to cook them up!! Just seems like they always get mushy instead of flakey like gills!! Give me a good recipe!! Thanks,Danny G.

Pics to come!!

15 plus inches!

Here's a mess of crappies we caught out of the creek. That is crazy pile of turtles!

Posted by msinc on 05-26-2015 12:26 PM:

Wow!!! Nice bunch of crappies fellas...my favorite way to cook them is pretty simple. First I always filet them, but you can just do the standard clean and cook them whole. I fold a little tray out of aluminum foil big enough to hold all or at least as many as you can on a grill. Low sides, like no more than 1/2 inch high. With the "tray" on the grill add enough real butter to at least cover the bottom of the tray 1/8 inch deep. It can be more. Put the fish in and grill until done. You can add either fresh black pepper {sprinkled on the top side} or some fresh prepared garlic added to the butter and baste the fish as it's cooking.
One other thing you can try...paint the top of your filets with honey and sprinkle on some black pepper. As it cooks the honey turns to thin liquid and runs down thru the fish. You wont taste the honey when you eat the fish, but you wont believe how good the fish will be. This is especially good for stronger fish...not really needed for crappie.
Here's a tip I learned about panfish...when you clean them if you do not filet them there is a little strip of like blood in the top of the gut cavity right where the ribs meet. This has to be "scrubbed" out of there with a stiff little brush or otherwise removed somehow. If not, it will give the fish a weird clay or dirt like flavor. Not always, usually more so in the spring, but it is not worth risking having that taste. I always filet every fish I cook just to completely get away from that little strip of stuff. I don't know what it is, but it will sure ruin your fish if you leave it there.

Getting all those snappers out of the ponds seemed to help the fishing...here is Lucky Jack and a few bass he caught by himself this evening.....
