pleasure hounds

This is a term I have heard forever but never really gave much thought untill the other day. I was talking to a friend and he stated that his Ol hound could never do any good in a night hunt, he was just a "pleasure hound." That got me to thinking about some of the hounds I have hunted with that could most definitely excell in a competion hunt but were no pleasure to hunt. But, honestly I can not imagine a hound not capable of competing being a pleasure to hunt either. I think the term "pleasure hound" is being used way to loosely. Curious to hear your thoughts and definitions of a pleasure hound.

It is nothing more than a word distinction to feed the egomaniacs who put a narcissistic amount of emphasis on the game of nite hunts. The difference in my eyes is that the comp dogs have traits to suit the rules of the game. Those traits may, or may not, be suitable to treeing coon. They just happen to suit the rules of the game.

I use it strictly to differentiate between dogs that ate entered in comp hunts and dogs that never are. As I use the term, it means nothing about that quality of the dog.

X2, A PLEASURE DOG IS JUST THAT, USED FOR THE OWNERS PLEASURE. HEY, COULD BE A POTENTIAL WORLD CHAMPIONS.

Let's say you own two dogs... one that is a great track dog, but sometimes struggles to settle-in on a tree. And the other one is a solid tree dog, one locate and they're done, but struggles working out a tough track. Together they're a pleasure to hunt, but apart neither one is the total package. Those two dogs are "pleasure" dogs.

Now, with that said, the tree dog might be able to tree a lot of coon, when the mulberries are on and the kittens are down, but they're not consistent. The same for the other dog, when in a hunt in snow in February and one coon treed, may win the hunt! But if your were honest with your self, you would know that they were not the total package, and therefore shouldn't be a "competition" dog, if being succesful at competition hunts, should require the "total package"!?!

Of course, there are some that beleive they haven't owned a dog, that wasn't worthy of the World title!

To me a pleasure dog is a dog that is a pleasure to hunt it could be titled it could no but its just a real pleasure to hunt!

I,'ve seen some top coon hounds that while they could win at compitition they were not good at compitition hunts. I've also seen some top compitition dogs that were not good at pleasure hunting. A good hound usually is good at both.

I know some people get total enjoyment out of a hound they can turn loose and listen to it boo hoo, bark & waller around for an hour or so and never leave the same holler, then quit & come back to the truck. Others really enjoy a hound that can get treed & sound great doing it, 3 or 4 times without ever leaving their light. While others really like a dog to be quiet in the box untill after the bar closes.
Myself, I believe a real good pleasure hound should be able to be competitive.
If it weren't for our total enjoyment & pleasure, why else would we spend so many hours following these old hounds.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Rob. "Pleasure" is defined by the owner. If someone wants to tree some coon, but really just like listening to the dogs, then ability to move a track, may not be a necessity for them. Some people go to the woods to relax, not to see how many trees they can walk to, regardless of whether there's a coon in them!

I think all too often, people assume that a measure of a dog is done in a competition hunt, whereas, some people could care less. And there's nothing wrong with that.

A measure of a dog is not acheived by a title or a score, it's acheived by the person doing the measuring!

PLEASURE DOGS

i'v seen some coondogs that would not get much farther than your light that could tree every coon you walked them across. i'v seen some coondogs that just flat would not operate with strainge dogs but tree the fire out of coons alone or with dogs they know. i'v seen some coondogs that were track stradlers that couldnt run a good track much faster than i can walk but sounded great & you could sit on the tailgate & drink a 6 pack before it could get tree'd.

TO ME THESE COONDOGS ARE GREAT PLEASURE DOGS FOR SOME & A BETTER COONDOG THAN HALF THE DOGS WE SEE IN THE HUNTS !!.

Its like hot rods.
Some are built fast but never taken to the track while others are built the same and taken racing on Saturday night.
It all boils down to what yo want to do with your dogs, just hunt or competition hunt.
Both are fine by me.

A pleasure dog is one that you look forward to darkcomming so you can turn loose. Not one that you wait till dark to start gathering your stuff and then the tv talks you out of huntin'. Your style may differ from mine, I think it is just whaterver is pleasurable to you.

a pleasure hound is a dog i can take any night of the week cut it loose and if it trees go shoot it out and if i dont i can call it back to me and leave when i want to, everybody knows its not a pleasure setting out all night waiting for a dog to come back to you

Rob I have one that is a ball to pleaasure hunt with but will not hunt with strange dogs. If a dog will not hunt with strange dogs are you gonna put $20 in the pot for a donation to talk with the cast while there dogs hunt? I have one that could hunt with an alligator and be fine.

Young hunters have no idea what it was like in the old days when there was a coon up every tree you went to;and no dogs fighting!!!
