When is it time to give up?

I have a female 19 months old that will track and has treed a few but will not stay at the tree when I go into her. She use to stay untill I ran her with an older dog that jacks the tree and bumped her off. Before she was bumped off by the older dog she would stick a tree and even try to climb it to get the meat. I grab her and tie her to the tree when she does tree, I work with her alot but she seems like once I am there she does not care anymore or wants to take off and start running another track. When released on a hot coon she has trouble tracking it or just seems to give up on it...Is it time to give up on her or should I give her another hide season before I call it quits on her? She seems almost to smart at times when I run her, I am just not sure what to do that will work and get her sticking the tree again.

I am having the same problem, same age and everything. From what more experienced guys have told me is just give her time. Put her in the woods as much as possible and be patient. Her brain is still developing. Like people some dogs mature faster then others. Good luck!

Well, I can't disagree with the above post but for me, it's time to move on when I no longer look forward to another night with my pup. When I have to make myself stick with them, we are done.

Everyone who hunts has a different degree or patience and expectation of what a dog should be doing at a certain time. It is completely up to the owner. I never understand however why people put such a high value on a dog that they are willing to make something they are supposed to be enjoying not fun on a long term basis.

If I have a dog that isn't doing what I want I will hunt that dog and only that dog until I am just plain sick of it. Spend 10 hunts not treeing any coon and chasing around a dog that won't stay treed and your decision of what to do will be much easier.

19 months old, if the dog has been hunted since its been a year old or so several times a week is WAY to long for this guy.

I got one. 18 months old. Used to go get treed with the old dogs. Now. She does nothing but lap the truck.
Like they say time just give them time

I have one that will tree every coon in the woods. Accurate son of a gun. 100% independent..Will stay till I get there. Which usually ain't long cause I have to freaking walk her lol. I ain't giving up just yet but she better hurry up.

What is there to give up on when a dog trees coon ?
I prefer a dog that I can walk with because I don't have as far to walk at one time when they do get treed. JMO

The coon ain't that thick around here but come on down and I'll let you and Dexter or Briar compete to see who can tree the most coon. LOL

Even more to the point in thin coon....how far do you have to walk the dog to get a strike? If your in North Georgia in the mountains I would think you would want a dog that goes hunting so you can walk the shortest line to it.

Just goes to show you different folks enjoy different styles of hunting

Yeah Jonathan he's right. I want to sit on the tailgate and listen to mine get treed somewhere. Then plan my attack on how to go get em lol. How can I hunt her in a hunt? Can't! It don't matter about other dogs. She want bust in there with or without em. 100% loaner except she's gotta have me around somewhere but Im not giving up. If it comes down to it. I'll start cutting her loose on hot deer and see if that will get her going. I want to kill her a few coon to and see if that works. Maybe that switch folks talk about will come on. If not. I can at least spot hunt in tight spots with her. So shell be good for something.

Don't take me to serious and get mad now. I don't want one of them get gone dogs because I don't care to walk over two mts and through 3 hollars to get the dog. I can walk my 2 a little ways and they will go but I try to walk along behind them at my own usually slow pace. Sometimes the shortest line ain't the best or easiest way around here.

the coon are scarce here too but i aint walkin a dog nowhere. a young dog i will a few times but your gonna have to get in there and hunt or your off the feed bill...

GADAWG, the deer thing works, I done it before...

Daisy had never been hunted by herself when i got her, and it took me a few walks, but now when the snap shuts she throws dirt. She s still young, but she hunts out good and is ALWAYS busy. Some nights i dont get a bark, some nights she trees a coon, but its a drought here and HOTTT, Im more less just letting her do whatever till this fall, and with a few coon and a lil luck, I ll have nice hound.

as for the treeing thing that the OP was questioning....walk in with your light off and see if that makes a difference..
sounds like all she needs is coon and coon..

Well I don't think about comp hunting myself because I don't really enjoy it. I have been to several but it just ain't for me. I have a dog that want back a walker but will back a bluetick so you know I couldn't comp hunt him if I wanted to.

I have seen a bunch of coon with a walker dog. In the past 2 seasons I've seen a fair amount with an ol blue english dog though. GA DAWG when ya'll having another HTX ? I got $10 says both our dogs fail. LOL

We thinking about the first fri nt in Oct. All depends on if we can get a permit for the wma here. Guiding spots are then when deer season is in. I prolly will fail. Im not waiting on 2 faults myself. I cut mine loose. They go off and open. They had better show me something. If not Im done. I withdrew with 20 min left in the last htx lol. Mine had her chance and treed slick! Which should be automatic failure in my book.

i dont know for sure, but you said that maybe shes to smart, well she might be smart enough to to leave the tree when she see you comming cause she dont want to be chained up. if she was my dog, i would hunt her by herself as much as you can where you know that theres coon for awhile. when she trees sneak in on her with your light out and catch her and get her treeing good, i would let her know thats what i want and dont let her see your lead. if she was able to tree coons for you before i doubt she forgot how. if what iam telling you is true, i dont know how much i would like a dog that will leave because it dont want to be chained to a tree when theres a coon up there. i hope she works out for ya.

There are no perfect dogs out there being the reason for 3 faults before failure but I do understand a handler holding their dog to a higher standard.

She lead the way to get these 6 coon in just under two hours:

The one on the right is our new young hound...He is also coming along really nice.

Congratulations, all your hard work, and patience has paid off, alot of young dogs don't have someone willing to do what you did and that is a big part in why so many pups don't make it.
It is a good feeling when they make it, and you know you had a big part in seeing them finish into a coondog, not everyone can do what you have done....
