above ground kennels

Do any of you guys put your coon hounds in an above ground kennels if so how big did you make them and can you post pics of them. I am getting ready to move and need to build a new kennel and I like the idea of the above ground kennels

I have mine above ground it is 5ft wide and 10 ft long. I really like it. You dont have to worry about ticks and fleas hardly at all.

i like the senecas but they are a bit pricey for me so i am going to just build some

i know that them hutches r nice for pups n beagles never seen one made for big hounds

I used some flooring out of a farrowing house. Only problem is when a female came in heat and had to be kept in the pen a while, her feet got soft and was cut easy when she was ready to hunt again. Had this problem with two different females.

Here is one of mine. This one is 10' long but the next ones were 8' long.

The slats in the floor are 1 1/2" apart. They are great cleaning out with a water hose and to be honest about it, the dogs waste usually falls through and doesn't stick at all.

The bench in front is a great height to work with on the dogs as far as putting collars on, etc. It is also a nice place to set dog food bowls on as you feed.

The dog house on the back has a removeable center piece so that if i needed to, I could open it up for a bitch and pups. The roof on it lifts up for access to the box. It is double walled and insulated..

The only difference that I made was that the doors holes on the subsequent ones are next to the center divider of the runs. That keeps the wind from blowing into the house.

I did do that. I put a 1"x 6" across there that is replaceable. That is one board that gets chewed on out of boredom.

you can build them alot of differant ways. many many designs to pick from.
myself i like em higher off the ground. flys dont bother the dogs that way. and i dont have to get on my knees to rake under them.
i clean them once a week except in the winter. then it is 3 months and then one spring cleaning to catch up.
working 10 and 18 hrs shifts and hunting nearly every night i did'nt have time or ambition to clean kennels every day with ground runs.
my old dog is 14 and has always been kept in a off ground set up. absolutly never had any feet,hip or leg problems.
he still dont at 14 yrs old..and i contribute that to the off ground pen.him and the young dogs all look like they have been swimming daily. my floor rails are 3/4 inch apart.plenty enough space for a turd to drop through.
no one will ever convince me to keep a dog any other way. been using these type pens for over 30 yrs.i also have used small wooden boxes with a 40 watt light bulb all these yrs for my water dishes.looks like a speaker box laid down on its back and the dish goes in the speaker hole. simple and cheap to make. i dont bust ice in the winter, just fill them like any other time of the yr and they got water anytime they want it. people that think feeding wet is enough water for a dog are dehydrating their dogs. dogs will drink more water in the cold weather then the rest of the yr.

We use the hog decking as well except ours is coated so no worries about cutting up the dogs feet. A friend of ours has one built similar to Paints-n-cows setup but he has it on a running gear so that it can be moved around the property, in/out of shade, closer to a windbreak, or just to clean underneath of it. I always thought that it was a great idea, just never have gotten around to doing it myself.
