I start hunting my pups at 9 months old with a good broke dog. When they start trailing and treeing with broke dog I start hunting them by themselves.I don't show them a coon in a cage,no turn loose coons.Usually by 11-12 months old my pups are going by themselves. The only coons my dogs see falls out of a tree.

I dont show mine one until they start looking less like a puppy and more like a dog, physically. And then it depends on the pups mentality, so in order to put a quantitative date on it is not really possible. Each breed and then each pup within that breed are different.

okay, this is not based on my pups, this is based on your personal opinion on age, VOTE IT UP! i know what i am going to do with my pups, what do you do with yours?

it is good to get ideas from everyone. that is how i am learning also.

All dogs are differant. That is the most often made mistake though is people thinking what is good for or works for one is good for the other. I don't care if there litter mates they may not train and probubly won't train the same or at the same age. Look at siblings some are alike and some are as differant as night and day.

Oh come on now don't be goin' there!! My 6 month old redbone will flat out maul a caged coon!

It all depends on when you think they are ready to see one, i've shown them caged coons as early as 3 months and they go nuts over it and some don't want to even look at it til' they are a year old. I show mine one when i think they can handle it.... but everyone is different

my english will maul a CAGED coon also. but can he handle one on his own??? a mean ole boar, rippin and tearin at his head??? dont think so. can my pup, cause he can maul a CAGED coon, win the world. dont think so. i personally will wait til i think he is ready. to maul the free coon, to tree readily and to work at his pace. not mine.

mauling the CAGED COON. but not ready for the woods . not on a ukc hunt. but we have logged alot of hours there already. in the woods that is. he is fearless. but not ready. you have to know you dog. PERIOD.

Age differs for all dogs, show them one when you think they can handle it.

I like to hide the ol bandit in the yard then turn the pup out and let him find it on his own to see what happens. I'll try them at 3-4 months old and if they dont do anything wait 6-8 weeks and try it again. The two I have now found the coon at 3-4 months old and barked when the ol bandit hissed and spit at them.

is it even necessary to show them a coon before hunting them?

No and I've never seen it do any good. I have seen it hurt them. All it does is make the owner feel good. My wife's house dog will maul a caged coon and he will ball up on a live one when it hits the ground. Will he tree a coon? NO, Take them hunting there is nothing like the real thing.

no but it can help but it can also hinder them, all about the breeding and how the owner feels about it

Your so right. No 2 dogs start the same. They all start at there on
pace. Just depends when the light comes on.
