I had good results with regular Purina Puppy Chow on the first pup I raised. Tried to start him on the Pro-Plan Puppy, and he never would eat it...so he ended up eating the Puppy Chow Soft and Chewy Morsels until he was about 5 months old. At that point he really was more interested in the adult food, so he has been eating Pro-Plan Chicken and Rice or Performance ever since. The latest pup I raised has eaten Pro-Plan Performance since I brought her home and has done well on it...

For those who feed Pro Plan Puppy~do you use an auto feeder? I have one at home that seems hungry all the time. I am feeding him twice the rec amount. He gets fed in the morning and evening. He's a BIG boy tho.

3 months old and he's over at 30 lbs.....

See if you can get Black Gold super blend in the red bag, its 30/20, and works fine for puppy food.

Negative on that. A puppy needs a good food for the first year at least. His bones and muscles do all their growing the first year and he neeeds a good high fat and protein food to support that.

ol roy puppy food

Crude Protein, min. 27%
Crude Fat, min. 10%
Crude Fiber, max. 5%
Moisture, max. 12%
Calcium, min. 1.39%
Phosphorus, min. 0.90%
Linoleic Acid, min. 1.00%

If that is not enough for a puppy, that is not being hunted I don't know what is. Much more than that and your dog could get rickets. I guess because it costs more, it must be better?

I was a purina club member for years and swore by them. But with the cost i decided to try something new. LOYAL BY NUTRENA fuels all of my dogs including pups with great results. Same results as proplan just better stool and easier on the wallet.

That's a lot of protein but no fat. I prefer more fat content then that.

forget the numbers whats important where are these numbers coming from grain or meat thats whats important at one time i was a believer in purina puppy chow till i tried diamond pups grew at a nice rate on the diamond without being fat they held god firm flesh and muscle then i started them eating adult diamond at 4 months old and noticed how much better they looked and acted i have stuch with this methodfor quite a few years now. i just won't feed a grain based food of any kind including puppy food as the dogs look act act so much better and sinse i started this method i have neved had a pup with any leg or joint problems

We obviously disagree, but I personally believe the over priced dog foods some of the mentioned have a placebo effect on the owner. I'd be curious to see a blind test over a six month period with different foods which one you would prefer. Just a thought, and I hope with all of our opinions this will help with a decision.

I keep a good bit of dog food and at all prices, Ive tried them all and I agree with you on some dog foods. I have also done some testing, but not all pups are the same. I've got a english that has been high strung from the first day of his life. I started him out on Black Gold puppy and everything was fine. Later has the summer heat started, I dropped back to feed with a 25/10 blend, and he really fell off. Some dogs just need more then others, so I just stick with what I know works the best for my dogs. My advice is try what you think is best and economical for you to use. If it gives your pups the squirts then you need to try something else, and the same goes on their appearance. If they won't gain weight and are skin and bones, its time for a switch.

i have attended many eminars on feeding dogs these seminars are not sponsered by any dog food companies but by vetinarian schools and such. the one thing that everyone has said is grain based foods are hard to digest and most of it passes through the dog with little benifit. this combined with over 50 years of raisind dogs shows me they are correct. take 2 pups from a litter feed one grain based food and one meat based food and you can see dramatic differance between the pups grain based will give you a fat mushy muscled dog and a meat based food will give you a solid muscled pup with just the right amount of firm flesh.
now it takes a lot less meat based food than it does a grain based food to raise a pup feeding less on the meat based equals the cheaper grain based food with a better pup. your certainly entitled to your opion but i will stick with what i know from experience
