cut up hound

i was hunting the other day and my dogs got pounded by a bear.. took them to the vets and got stapled up but today one of them tore the staples out .whats the best thing to do ? there on rimadyl 100 mg for pain reliever and cephalexin 500 mg antibiotics
is there any over the counter stuff to put on open wounds ?

Depends on how big the wound is and whear it is if its not that big Keep it clean it will heal I use Hydrogen peroxide I keep a staple gun just for that reason . John

I had a dog downed by a bear this week as well. My vet didn't staple said its better to drain on its own. But guess it really depends on the size of cut. Gave me the same meds though. First time I have ever gotten pain meds for a dog?

It should probably be stapled back up.

no it wasn't the plott.... it was both of my blue dogs...the plott was unbelievable that day that's why she'll stay with my pack for quit some time

super glue was designed to fix cut on people I guess it would work on a hound.

had one hog cut bad a wile back we stapled her she pulled them out had her resewed pulled the suchers out also. finally just had to let her heal on her own dident scar to bad cant really tell she was cut as bad as she was

Tim, if the wounds are not open into the body cavity, i would leave them open to let the dog clean himself. the cephalexin will heal them up nicely.

as for the bluecoat..... im sure you know all about that.. would stay away from it if in an area dog can lick.

just watch it and you should see in 2 to 4 days a big healing difference in the wounds.

watch for any redness or swelling, but im sure if they are on the antibiotics they will be just fine.

thanks Kelli..... I'm using a cone now so she can't lick it plus triple antibiotic ointment and covering it .should i leave it uncovered cause it's not in the body cavity its on the rear quarters but pretty deep

tim i would leave the wound open to drain. it will heal from the inside out.

if you go to a drug store such as riteaid or brooks.. you can find some betadine. its in iodine solution you mix with water. you can use that to rinse the wound out maybe 2 times a day. that will help as well. ( can use a syringe to suck up solution and squirt into the wound )

if all her stapes are out i would try without the cone, her licking it may help. if she is biting at it and nonstop licking, may have to put it back on, but she will be able to keep it cleaner if she has access to it.

I hog hunt and we deal with this alot. I have found allum,sulpher both in powder form from any drug store mixed with equal parts of liquid cut heal will fix you up. never ever let me down

Don't use peroxide more than once. It kills live tissue and it will take longer to heal. Stick with the betadine it makes a mess but works well.

neosporin works pretty good to help heal, prevent infection and dry. the generic kind will save you some money.

Super Glue is a pretty good suggestion depending on the location.

I have also used super glue. It works great but you may have to reapply daily but my dog healed up awesome didnt even have a scar. Just make sure to leave a small bit unglued to drain. I just cleaned it real good daily and when it got to healing up I would apply some triple antibiotic ointment twice daily. Hope your dog heals well and is back up and hunting soon!

almost forgot

pickling lime works good for pullin out abcesses helps to dry it out an keeps the flys off. i used that on my bmc that was cut so bad.

we have had more dogs get cut bit and stomped so far this year than i have ever seen we are in are second week of season and everyone in are group has either docterd their dogs or took them to the vet have had some dogs killed but any ways i have two thats laid up from yesterday i use peroxide and 3 cc of tylon 50 antibiotic and put em up to rest till they are better and do it all over again have my eight year old female laid up for bout a week befor she gos again she was hammered pretty bad

I have been using gentian violet in place of other topical antiseptics for myself and family for sometime. I was put onto it while in the tropics where even a small cut or bite tends to fester. I have also started using it on the dog with good effect. It tends to stay on, not smear and also dry up the wound better than other ointment or salves and its cheap. I paid about $1.50 for a small bottle and it lasts a long time. The only downside is that it leaves the area applied to violet/purple but it goes away with time or rubbing alcohol.

After running out of the bottle I got over seas I had to ask the pharmacist at walgreens for it as they keep it behind the counter but require no prescription. Its great for coon bites and various scratches, not sure about deeper lacerations.

Gentian Violet...

...Only ONE word of caution...IT WILL STAIN EVERYTHING... sometimes permanently... including the good pants you forgot you had on...the top of the washer and dryer where you spill it etc...
We use the "purple ear stuff" which you find on the coonhound forum often... we use it on wounds as well as ears very successfully. It DOESN'T sting...even with alcohol on MOST hounds and people.

The antibiotics will be enough to heal the wound up fine.No topical products are necessary.Keep the cone on the dog except for a few minutes everyday.While the cone is off the dog will most likely clean it up sufficiently.If the cone is left off some dogs will bother it too much and cause the healing process to take longer.Just had a dog with a 2 1/2 inch gash that was right down to the muscle but it healed up fine in 2-3 weeks without staples or any topical solutions.
