Minused/Scratched for being silent?

Has anyone ever seen this rule enforced, and if so, how often? Myself and a friend were talking about this the other day, and I am not a competition hunter...just curious...

I have scratched only 1 dog myself. Hard to catch BUT a smart judge can get them

Never saw it and saw one one night that was silent...The only thing saved him was he located and treed on a tree and left it went on and covered another dog.The guy said that was ground barks LOL.....I'd bet the farm hes silent..Hes a grntch so he hunted in atleast 8 hunts

never, not once in all the hunts Ive ever been to has a dog been scratched for being silent.

Even the most silent dog will usually bark somewhere and not park its butt. A cold tree, something.

Its just not a rule that's easy to enforce.

Ive even had a few MOH's state they would overturn a scratch for it in the first place. Citing that 2 hours of hunting time isn't enough to decide for certain if a dog is truly silent or not.

It ends up being one of those things that's more trouble than its worth.

I did come very close to doing it at AO a couple years ago. The MOH at the satellite club didn't leave much of an impression though.

A local pleasure hunter around here has a dog that is stone cold silent on coon. He is out of competition hunting lines and trees a few coon but from talking to people that have hunted with him he never even makes a locate, just falls into a hard, fast chop. This dog had been sold several times before ending up here for the very fact that he was too silent to run in the hunts.

In this case I truly think this dog could be scratched.

Had a guy wanting to scratch me in a GRNITE cast once for my dog being silent. The dog I was hunting was not silent, he was tight on the ground but would open and run. The hotter the track the more he barked. Just so happened this night the moon was bright,it was horribly dry and the coons were not moving. He was just going through laying coon up and not barking around trying to figure out where it was. Reasons like this is why I'm against the silent dog rule. Sometimes, not very often, but sometimes there just isn't good tracks to run and a lay up dog doesn't need to bark on the ground.

GrNt Grabers Dan was scratched for being silent at the Hamilton RQE several years ago. He was scratched about halfway into the hunt. I believe Mike Parish was the judge if I heard it correctly.

Ive seen it once in another cast at the same hunt i was in. The dog that was scratched was winning by 500 points almost done with the hunt imagine that. If i had to win by scratching a silent dog i would be embarrased.

I've never seen one scratched for this.

Odd rule

It's kind of an odd rule anyway. In competition, if you have what you think is a good coon dog that is open and you can't beat a good coon dog that is silent, then maybe you should think again about how good your coon dog is. The only time it could even matter is in a two dog cast where second strike and first tree nets 200+ while first strike and second tree nets 175+

I've always wondered about that because if I have a dog that can get first or second strike consistently and cover a first tree dog that gets 3rd or 4th strike consistently, I should come out on top every time.

The only real advantage to a silent dog is that the handler knows for sure that the dog is treed as soon as he hears him bark. We should all know our dogs good enough to believe we have that same advantage.

I had a male once that was pretty near silent. He made Nite Ch. scoring 1050+ in a 4 dog cast by scoring 7 first trees and 7 fourth strikes. He kept falling treed and scoring coons in the middle of 3 other dogs tracking around standing on their heads...who had the best coon dog in that situation. I would have been more embarrassed about owning one of the others than I was about owning ol' Rocky. On the other hand...I won 13 out of 18 Nite Ch. casts and had only 3 winds towards Grand. When I hunted against good dogs that were open and more than one Nite Ch cast at a hunt, I couldn't score enough points to consistently win even though I consistently won my cast and consistently had the dog in the cast that would tree the coons.

Silent dogs are for hide hunters who don't really care about a well rounded dog. The majority of folks like to listen to a dog do his work and that requires an open trailer. As far as competition goes, I don't care if there's a silent dog in the cast especially if he's a real good coon dog and can keep the rest of the cast on a tree...I'll take my chances with my dog being a first strike dog and willing to cover another dog if he doesn't have anything going on himself. A rule is a rule I suppose but I don't really see the advantage in competition of hunting a silent dog.

Unrealistic expectations are a roadblock to success, judge your dogs by what they are ready to give not by what you wish they'd do.

I've got a 1 year old female and she is TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT when I hunt her alone. If I put her with other dogs she will open here and there, but if it came down to the wire the 8 would get her just about everytime. It's funny because I can watch her on my Garmin and see what she's doing, but I can't hear her doing it LOL!! Then BAM she is treed!!! She is making a fine hound. As far as the question I have never seen one scracthed for it. I have seen a dog in a PKC hunt that the guy said he wouldn't run him in UKC b/c of this rule. He would have been scratched, and would be all the time. The guy said the dog didn't EVER bark until he hit the wood.

If the other dogs are opening on good tracks and one dog never opens,just falls treed on two or more tracks, I call it silent.

It's not always easy and you must go on the words of the rule "The dog must prove to be an open trailer". When the tracks are lously you do not call a dog silent if it falls treed, and the others are working the track right there. More times than not a silent dog will slip by and not be caught, I'd rather let one by than scratch one who opens on track. I will not wait until the end of the cast to scratch a dog, if it got that far with out being caught then it got by.

Years ago I often judged a dog who was said to be silent. Every time I judged him he would open trail at least one track and often every track.

my dog is silent but what he does is like locate then go around the tree in about a 10 yard circle to check if its up there then he locates again and then trees... could i get away with that in a hunt? hes only a year

i don't see how you could scratch a dog for being silent before the hunt was up there is a chance they would open on the next track...i had a guy threatin to scratch me in the zones because mine fell treed twice and the other dogs were opening but they were also standing on there heads could not move it...tracking conditions have a lot to do with a dog opening on track...jmo

To do it right you would'nt be able to scratch a dog until the hunt was over. And then you had better of questioned every strike call the handler made.
