my new cheap kennel

I see where everyone is looking for cheap kennels, well this one isn't fancy, some people may not like it. I had the door panel and the back panel sitting in one of the barns for years, never had anything to do with them, I have 30 dollars worth of 2x4 squared 6 foot tall fencing, the rest of the stuff I had sitting around the farm. It keeps her in and everything else out. It is 12x16 6 foot tall.

Posted by J.J Melin on 02-04-2009 03:20 AM:

how thick is that 2X4 wiring and did it come in a roll? I just bought a house and thought about using the 2X4 wiring that came in a roll.

My family has been on this farm for 60 years, and my grandad and my dad never threw anything away. So most times we can go find something to use if we look hard enough. Things don't always look pretty, but it normally works pretty good.

Do with what you got.... I've always had fenced in concrete kennel runs, but I'm switching to fenced in raised wood floors. much easier cleaning. Had to buy some green board, but got all the fencing, gate, and concrete blocks out of the scrap pile. Even a metal roof on the houses.

I would be worried about your dog digging out of their though

She doesn't try to get out at all. She is very well behaved in the kennel. Its only been up a week, we will see. If she does I'll figure something out

Posted by Plottluvr on 02-04-2009 04:16 AM:

If you can get your hands on some rebar you can pound it in every 6 inches along the bottom of the kennel all around. That will keep her in.

Also, bend the ends over the bottom of the kennel to keep her from pushing it up.

I built one the other day out of 1.25 in square tubing and stock pannels. It is solid and built in pannels. Cost me about a hundred bucks for it

Trust me on this one, that is a false statement!!! Having raised woods floors is the biggest pain in the a$$! Hard to keep clean and all the crap just falls under them. Plus its about twice as expensive as concrete kennels. Just go with concrete or rocks you will be way better off!!

Yes, the crap falls under them. That is why its raised about 2 foot. Shovel or rake once a week underneath, and no mess at all.

raised

i am doin the same because the i think concrete sucks like right now it has snowed so much i scooped em but you can't keep up now my dogs are walkin on 3 to 4 inches of hard packed ice at least with the raised when it thaws it will have somewhere to go

My kennels are on the ground. I put a cattle panel under my pens so they can't dig out and nothing can dig in.

Dont mind Jim, he's just got some hyper dogs lol

another thing, do yourself a favor and build a shelter over that kennel. Looks good other wise, plenty of room too.

Okey Dokey....when you build it and hate it dont say I didn't warn ya. Mine is raised over 2 feet, it is 36' x 12'. Has 6 six foot runs. Best of luck!

i put old cheap concrete wire down and covered with pea gravel. they can only dig to the wire with the pen sitting on top of wire. you can get a pick up loaded with pea gravel for $15. easy to clean if kennel is covered.

I'm thinking about pea gravel for this pen. I might do a cover when I get some time. I bet i can find enough stuff around to do it. Thanks for the suggestions

I went with the rock once upon a time with the wire under it and in a couple of years it was so nasty I couldn't stand it. DOGS SHED HAIR and all that hair & hay has to go some where, you guessed it, in the rock. If you have concrete just pay attention to how much hair you wash out each day. I tried several different kinds and finally turned to concrete and have never regretted it. I have a roof that extends over the back, sides & front so I don't have to worry with snow or ice build up. It makes it nice when its raining & I'm feeding also.
