Question about performance sires....

The deadline for paying up a sire is fast approaching jan 1st. I am debateing nominating my dog at this time becasue some have shown interest in breeding , but there are no garrantees in breeding any females.

My question is; Is it a good idea to pay the nimination fee's now and hold off on buying the DNA kit at $49 to wait and see if anyone does decide to breed later in the year? I realize that it will show paid up , but DNA pending... This method would cost the $100 nomination fee and if no females came during the year , I just would not DNA him.

The alternative would be to wait and see if any females came to breed , but then it would cost much more to pay up later with penaltys.

Which route would you go under these circumstances???

I'm pretty positive that I read in CB that Sires paid up in the Performance Program, but pending DNA will not be listed anymore.

Laura is correct. Performance Sires who are still pending DNA will no longer be listed until the DNA has been processed.

Mark I'd just go ahead and pay it. I mean heck when you get the DNA done the first time you are through with it, and it takes forever to process. See then next year it won't cost you but $100 to pay him up. =) JMO

YES, YOU CAN....I DO NOT REMEMBER THE STEPS TO TAKE, BUT AS LONG AS THE DNA WAS DONE WITH A DNA SERVICE THAT BOTH RECOGNIZE, IT CAN BE TRANSFERED EITHER WAY, WITH A FEE..

Yes, if it's through PKC. They use the same DNA lab. (MMI Genomics) You could simply send a copy of your DNA Certificate to the UKC office. There is an $8 processing fee included. So yes, if the dog is already DNA'd through PKC then by all means don't spend the extra money to do it twice.

I nominated my old dog when the program first came out. He was one of the first paid up. This was a dog that nobody else would ever breed to and I would never breed again. So far that $149.00 investment has paid me back over $1500.00 dollars and there is almost certainly more of it to come in the future. My thinking is that if you are gonna breed a bitch, then nominating the stud is the easiest decision you could ever make. It amazes me that anyone would breed to a stud that isn't in the program unless you know the pups will never compete. If you are strictly a pleasure/meat hunter then there would be no reason to nom or to even register for that matter.

GOOD POST JIM.........AND I WOULD SAY THAT I AGREE I THINK THE PERFORMANCE PROGRAM IS SECOND TO NONE.........

Mark, Brandon may pay for it if you breed a gyp to Ol Ben.

Ive hunted with marks hounds I would gladly breed to one of his black n tan females !!!!!!!!!!!!!

I could probably sell the pups for $300 a piece!!!!!!

I say if you are going to wait for other people to bring females, you may not want to do it. but if you or your buddies want to breed to him and get some pups, go ahead

The flip side of that is: A lot of people will not breed to a dog that is not nominated. I got a breeding last spring, because the first choice dog was not a performance sire. The stud owner was telling the female owner that he was going to get him nominated, but he didn't want to take a chance on the guy keeping his word. Like I said in an earlier post, what better advertising can you get for a hundred bucks.

Thanks much for the kind words...

I have decided to jump in the performance sire bussiness and get him paid up...Its not that I think a have a stud worthy of breeding , but the performance program is the way to go, just in case I decide to raise pups..

Thanks to all for the information and to Allen @UKC too..
