Thyroid Question

I'm sure this has been asked on here a thousand times before, but what are the signs of a dog with a Thyroid problem?

Posted by N Williams on 03-24-2018 06:18 PM:

It really doesn't matter. If you want optimal performance you need your hound around a 3.0 to 3.5 in winter or cooler weather. Makes a huge difference in there performance. In hot weather you might won't a little lower. Signs are excessive drinking. Running out of gas. Weight gain the list goes on and on. Everyhound ive checked as been between 1.1 to 1.4. And a few around .6 to.7. Normal ranges are between 1.0 to 4. So don't let your vet tell you a 1.4 is ok. It's to low for a performance dog.

Every hound you checked had a thyroid problem ? Or they just worked better on the drugs ? How many have you checked ?

Like I said. A few have been hypothyroid. Most have been between 1-1.4. Witch is low normal. That's ok if your going to hunt it one night a week or for a lap dog. Not high enuff for a working dog. In order for them to sustain optimal performance they need to be a minimuimal of 2.5. I've checked about 5. Different breeds and different lines. None have had above a 1.5. Yes all worked better at a high normal range. It's not like thyroid is worse now than it use to be. It's people have figured that out.

You do what you want they belong to you, but their thyroid is normal. What you are doing is using a drug to enhance their performance and destroying their thyroid in the process. Like I said you do what you want but thats just not for me.

Yes normal for lab dog. What hurts them is to get it to high. That's why you check them often. I know a dog that died a few years ago at 13. He was on them his hole life.

No. You can dope a dog. It's not thyroid pills. There is a steroid for dogs. It will make them sterile just like our steroids. I've never done it and wish they test dogs at major hunts.

Well it will be different for different dogs. The cold weather seems to have a big effect on them if it's low. I have noticed they might over heat if there in high normal ranges in summer. I will give all of you advice. A vet will ALWAYS undermedicate them. A guy had a dog off my Dot and awesome cross. Last year he said she's was the best he ever had. Most accurate and dead loner like her mom. I called him a few months ago to see how she was doing he said she had back slid bad. Missing a lot not same dog. I told him what to do. He took her to vet. SUre nuff . .7. Vet said .3. I told him to put her on .8 twice a day and go back in 2 weeks by judging her wait. He called me a 2 weeks later said she was operating like a machine. I told him that was her majic number but he needed to get her checked to know her levels that way if it fell again they would know where to get her. Sure enuff she was a 3.1. Right were you want to be.

Curious how or where you get the test kit from and what your treating it with ? Vet's down here are extremely expensive and not always very helpful .

Ask around and find you a vet that specializes or understands performance dogs. Have blood work done on them. Blood work will make sure they don't have a non thyrodal illness. Example; erliciosis, or limes can bottom their thyroid out. If there clean make sure the vet you use can atleast do the bloodwork to get there t levels that way you don't have to send it to lab every time. It might take a few months and few trips to get there t levels where you want them. Make sure you hunt them normal because how hard you hunt them effects there t levels.

10 panel tick test or whatever she said it was is real expensive cheapest I found was 350 $ plus 45 $ vet fee antibiotics extra t test was 100 $ plus 45 vet visit antibiotics extra she's 9 yrs old nice tree dog good track dog I try to hunt her 3 night's a week . She's not a comp dog anymore I just want her healthy for as long as possible but if It's gonna be 150 $ a month for 3 month's plus antibiotics that seem to cost more then human antibiotics it's a big investment for an old pleasure dog .

Call around and find a vet that will just charge you to draw the blood, send it off and then telephone you results. It should cost you about $50. Order the Synthroid from Canadian Pharmacy, cheap and no prescription needed. Just start out at 1 per day and increase or decrease as needed. Google hypothyroidism in dogs and read all about it on the interweb. The vets are going to price themselves out of business. If you can't afford them then do it yourself. Dealing with Thyroid issues is not an exact science. Use common sense. Some vets have it and some don't. They are human.

I am not trying to be hard to get along with but would u explain
1- Draw blood = appointment = $45.00
2- Where to send it = $50.00
3- Telephone results WHERE
4- order= ? $
The vet charged me $141.50 for blood work
Never the less going to have well over $150.00 and still don't have no idea what you are doing just giving the dog some pills as needed?.
At least that is my thought.
HELP me understand please

No appointment neccesary... lead dog in, tech draws blood, walk out. Tech calls you with results, usually next day.
Google is a great thing...all the dosing info you need. Did you try Google? Of course if you can't understand it then I guess that you will have to pay someone else to do it for you.
What do you think the vet is doing? If the level is low, you give more. If the level is high, you give less. It is not exactly rocket science. You are treating symptoms anyway. Start with a minimal amount and increase until your dog is doing well.
