Ginseng

Who else lays in the woods all of sept.I uaally sell between 7-10lbs dry every yr..this is my coonhunting money haha

me...had 7lb.7oz last year..season came in yesterday here...

And yes sir most time the north side is better than the south side..look for good green places if it looks dry it prob ain't there it likes the shady places best the deeper and darker the holler the better most times..

Thanks for all the tips...sounds like I just might have a few good spots anyways...I don't have any laurel, I got ferns and I do know what Cohosh is. Don't have a lot of it, but I have definitely seen some. Lots of poplar and wild cherry trees. Not really much pine.
If I find any this weekend I will post some photos. Thanks again.

I haven't dug any in yrs, but hasn't it ran it's course by now?

Don't you have to get CITES tags to harvest it??? At least in Virginia???? I don't actually plan on digging up any of it, I just want to see if I can even find some.

Not that I kno of long as it private land..you notbposed to hunt it on natiomal forest anymore go figure.. We pay the taxes for that land but what can ya do....I replant and leave more than I dig every time jn the woods don't dig nothin little any old sang hunter has more woodsmanship than any them fellers sitting behind deam making these laws...anyone knos if u kill the source what happens..

I wouldn't doubt that being your farther south but up here I'd have to say it was probably a good move. The berries are usually dropping up here just a week or two before you can harvest. You mentioned people being smart enough to not over harvest, that would be true with old timers but with this new popularity of hunting ginseng I just have my doubts if people are experienced enough or sensible enough. There's even a reality show about hunting it now. I think people watch that and go to the woods to see how much they can haul in with no regard for the future.

There is a plant with a leaf shaped just like Ginseng with a similar saw toothed edge to it and it even is somewhat pronged like Ginseng but the prongs aren't quite the same and the stem is tough, Ginseng has a real delicate stem to it.
