The Bucket List for 2013

A good friend of mine and I were talking today, and we are forming plans to take some time and make a few four day weekend trips this fall to coon hunt.

I know that I have hosted guys from out-of-state on more than a few occaisions to hunt in Northern Indiana, and I know that my buddy, who is from Northern Ohio, has done the same.

This year we are forming a "bucket list" of states that we would like to travel to, hunt for a couple of nights, and enjoy ourselves.

We are looking for either a weekend host, or some local guidance about where to find public land. We are also not completely against the idea of paying someone to guide us for a couple of nights on private ground if need be.

I'm pretty sure we can stumble our way through Michigan without a whole lot of help, and I have a really good friend in Wisconsin that is chomping at the bit to get us to come up there....but we are also looking at Minnesota (looking to try for a trophy size critter, heard there are some bigguns up that way), Northern Illinois, Missouri, and maybe even the delta in Mississippi later in the year when we just cant hunt any more up here because of snow and winter.

We don't have anything to prove to anyone in the power of our dogs...we are happy with what we are feeding and are pretty sure we can tree a couple of coon here and there....so if you are looking to compete with some southern boys....save that for the competition hunt arena. Looking to circle some dates on the calendar and start planning, so let me know what you have close by, and the best time to plan to come.

I'll also likely be packing my cur dog to do some "out-of-state" squirrel hunting...so if you have always wondered about squirrel hunting over dogs, and have a place we can turn loose in the day time, you would certainly be welcome to join us then too.

I'm open to all suggestions and ideas.

I don't think West Virginia is on anybody's list!

In all seriousness though good luck Joe. Sounds like a lot of fun. I know I would love to be able to do the same thing. I've been very fortunate because since I've started here at UKC I've got to hunt in several states I never hunted before. Can't wait to add more and more to the list.

If you want to hunt in Southern Illinois (Flora area) just let me know. Several guys down there will be willing to take you. You've probably already been down there for one hunt or another but just in case, the door is open.

I'll tell you two of the places I've hunted in my life where I thought the hunting was phenomenal. Southwest Wisconsin (near Mineral Point). Went on the Final Four for the Heartland Classic this year over there. A little bit rolling but man they have coons and it is nice country. Everyone is very nice there too. Thought about staying a time or two.

The other place in Central Michigan, north of Grand Rapids. In fact I'm heading up there tonight to hunt. Great hunting and probably the most coon I've ever seen. Flora has a good coon population, but nothing like what I saw up there.

That's not to say that all the other places I've hunted in my life weren't good to great places, I just liked these two the best (other than Flora probably but that is home after all). I've also had good hunts in SC and MS in the last year.

What also helps is everywhere I've hunted I've got to go with some first-rate people that made the night much more enjoyable.

Good luck, Joe. Let us know how the trip is going. Take lots of pictures for us to see. Might inspire a few more of us to get out and meet hunters in different parts of the country!

Joe, if you would like to try the white river refuge then give me a call. You have hosted me, I would be glad to take you. White river is some of the best hunting in the country.

What is discouraging about planning such a trip is that some states make it so darn difficult to do it legally, some like Mi make it very eexpensive and some make it down right impossible.

Joe,

I grew up and hunt around Cedarville, IL, which is about 100 miles west of Chicago, 15 miles south of the Wisconsin stateline and 60 miles east of the Mississippi River at Dubuque, IA. I live in Madison, WI (just an hour north), but hunt most weekends around Cedarville. The dogs stay there at my dad's place in Cedarville.

Illinois is closed for deer season from November 22nd - 24th and December 5th - 8th. I have the TWB&FA Fall Meeting the weekend of December 14th, but you and your buddy are welcome any other time. Our season opens on November 5th.

I don't have a place to put you up, but I can get you in the woods. Besides my areas, we could probably line up hunts with a couple other guys within 30 minutes of Cedarville. Hills and BIGGER sections to the southwest, smaller timbers and creek/river bottoms around me and some lower lying river bottom timbers off to the east.

PM me if you're interested.

Thanks,
Grant

Grant, one of my favorite places to hunt was up at Dubuque, Ia. Had a very good freind that lived there. He has passed now and haven't been up that way in a few years. Very good hunting in that area.

Until a couple of years ago, we had a club in Elizabeth, which is even closer to Dubuque. Great hunting. Had the UKC World Finals there in 2008 and had a great time putting it on. Beautiful area over there, too.

I just want to thank each and every one of you that has responded, and to the several that have sent PMs. Mr. Ed Casper and I will be making some road trips this fall. Eddie is going to Canada this weekend to get the ball rolling (I have other obligations this weekend and can't make that trip), and after that we will be making our plans.

Seems that the states we picked all have some kind of restriction or regulation about when non-residents can hunt....so we are working through all of the legal and travel logistics.

I'll be calling some of you very soon to begin the early planning stage of our trips. I've even thought about filming some of it and making a DVD to share with my grand-kids when I'm too old to get out and about any more!
