I have been looking at buying property in north central Ark. maybe northwest. Perhaps even southwest Mo. Are there plenty of places to hunt? Can you hunt the Nat. Forest areas?

Yeah I hunt Hobbs and weddington Woods quite a bit.

Posted by Doug Malone on 09-16-2013 03:50 PM:

Thanks Seth, can the Nat. Forest be hunted anytime. Is there other areas that can be hunted? I would like to hear from as many people in that general area as possible. The coon hunting will play a big part in my final decision.

I hunt them both year round. There is a time for arkansas that you can't run dogs for pleasure but it just says daytime. They both close for permit deer hunts but that's just a few weeks a year.

I appreciate the responses. I know there has to be more hunters in those areas especially around Yellville and Mountain Home. What about down around Hot Springs? Good hunting? Plenty of places to hunt? Lots of coons? Thin coons?

Theres several hunters around Hot Springs, and I don't know a whole lot about that area, but it seems like alot of pine country and/or lease land.
I work for the Ozark Nat'l. Forest Service out of Clarksville and my district is about 70% hardwood, and 30% pine. Just about all of the districts on the Ouachita Nat'l. Forest (which is the forest land around Hot Springs) are gonna be similar percentages, but reversed- 70% pine to 30% hardwood.

The area I'm in has a huge amount of public access land available for coonhunting, and relatively little competition for spots to hunt. I can be on the Arkansas River hunting Corps of Engineers floodplain land, or in the National Forest hunting the mountain hardwoods in about 10 minutes. That said, the mountains are pretty rugged, and there are large portions that are simply too rough to hunt effectively.
Still, in the day and age of posted signs and pay/lease only hunting, I've got it pretty good.

Thanks Cory, I am from central Louisiana. I have to hunt briar patches and cutovers a lot of time. If I make this move I am going to invest in a oxygen tank, mountains and hills will kill me!

I think the mountains are growing. I sure breathe harder climbing them than I used to!
I bought a couple mules to hunt off of in the mountains this winter. I'm pretty excited about cool weather coming.

I am supposed to be taking my wife to Branson to watch some Christmas show in Nov. I may get with you and make a hunt if you don't mind. Not sure about the mule riding though lol.

What about some of you hunters in Taney and Ozark county Mo. How is the hunting there?

I live about about a hour from branson. The hunting around here is hills. Yelliville/MTn. Home around yelliville flippin area is own pretty much by forest woods/ ranger boats. He is 100% against any kind of dog hunting. Not saying you can't find land to hunt on that doesn't belong to him but he owns a lot.
