Coon Clubs (why)

What is the purpose of a coon club?

Hold hunts at them.

I believe that a club should offer more than just night hunts and bench shows.

What do you have in mind?

Posted by mauser06 on 04-28-2013 11:55 PM:

Many clubs do hold different things...hunts, shows, treeing contests, water races, squirrel dog/cur and beagle events, I know some hold coyote and porcupine contests etc etc...as well as buddy hunts and hide hunts etc..

Don't know what else you might have in mind?

Local clubs often have a primary directive of hosting sanctioned events such as night hunts and bench shows. However they are also a local gathering place for coonhunters, it is where many of us met for the first time, it is the place where friendships are developed, where we learn about other styles of hunting, breeds of hound, and often is the place where dog and hunting supplies are sold via word of mouth. Many clubs offer buddy hunts, club competitions for dogs and members (such as dog of the year), dinners a few times, and even Christmas parties for their members.
On the side is the threat of local ordinance changes, the first line of defense against these is the local club, a good club secretary gets the agendas for local commissioner meetings and if a animal or hunting proposal is considered the local club can attend and make their voices heard on the issue..

I have an idea that will raise money, create good relationships and be able to hunt in different areas. Here it is.....
It's called Inner Club Hunts. You need at least 4 clubs to participate. Each club will host one inner club hunt. The club with the most plus points wins the hunt and bragging rights till the next hunt. You can hunt as many dogs as the host club has guides but only 5 scores will count. After all clubs host, the club with the most wins, will host the inner club championship. All clubs will put up $100 the wining club gets all the money.
I am in the heart of NC and there are several clubs within an hour from our club and I think that this would be a great program.

We do a points system on Ukc and akc for club members. If your a club member and pay your entry fee to hunt you get 10 pts. Just for hunting. if you win your cast you get 20 pts. After the last hunt of the year in Ukc and akc we take the highest top 12 out of each kc and have a handler of the year hunt. Top 4 highest scoring dogs from each cast goes back out to determine the winner in that kc. Last year was our first year doing it and we have a big trophy for the winner. This year where still going to so the huge trophy but going to add a dog box or a garmin to the winner this year. Like a dog box in one kc and a garmin in the other. Oh ya to determine the 4th dog on the last cast the club votes in the final dog. It's real fun all year long.

Also like Chris explained in his post is a good example why we have clubs. But let's not forget its also meant for our younger generations That's coming up. They learn a lot when they grow up in a coon club. From what I have seen the one thing they learn the most is the art of bull sh*tting. LOL!!!!

Those sound like great clubs. I belong to a good club. I want to make it a great club. It may be hard to do with just 10 members but we got to start somewhere.

Several clubs in IL did this very thing in the 80's. I know my local club was involved. They had a traveling trophy that would go to the club that won. I think only 4 dogs from each club could participate (to keep it where guiding was easy) but several different clubs were involved. They would add up the 4 scores from each club and whoever won got the trophy. I don't know how often they hunted for it (every couple of months or even every year) but it was good to get to know people from different clubs.

Back in the 70's we had a traveling trophy that stayed in the Flora Coon Club membership. Basically here's how it worked: you could challenge whoever had the trophy to a one-hour hunt (UKC rules) any time during the week. Sometimes 3 or 4 guys would all hunt together for the hour and then whoever won the cast got the trophy to take to their house until someone challenged them. The whole idea was to foster friendship and pleasure hunting among the club members. Problem was it kind of died out after a few years.

Here's the really neat part though. The guy who last won the trophy still had it a few months ago. He brought up in the meeting to start up the challenge hunts again as a way of getting guys together to hunt. The club is even using the same trophy they did all those years ago. Problem now is someone has to beat him to win it and he's got some pretty tough dogs! I think its working though and everyone is having a lot of fun going hunting together.

I think there are many reasons to have a club outside of hosting licensed events. They are also social and community organizations for coonhunters. I know our local club has non-licensed club hunts, a dog of the year run-off, buddy hunts, fish fry's, hog roasts, licensed hunts, etc. They are also good will ambassadors to the community and the landowners they hunt on.

Paul you brought to mind some old memories of my home club. Years ago when clubs were just getting started in the area it had over 300 members at it's peak. As more clubs begin to form that membership also begin to drop.

But here are some of the things it did.

We had a challenge trophy. You had to be a member of the club to hunt for it. Any club member could challenge and the club encouraged this. If a person won it 3 times they got to keep it and the club would buy a new Challenge Trophy.

The club had an annual Coon and Chilli Supper in January each year. It was always a big turnout where the hunters brought their family. We would hold it in a school to have room for it. That was also a good way to start off the new years membership.

The club was also involved in the politics of hunting so to speak. We were close to an old military base where at times people could or couldn't hunt. We had to fight for our right as night hunters and did so by dealing with the Game and Fish Commissioners, my dad and uncle went to school as kids with the Governor who appointed some of the commissioners so the club was able to make contact with him.

At one of our Chilli Suppers we got a petition signed and I took it to our US Representative when he was back home. The Governor was also a US Senator by then. So what might have seemed an impossible task actually worked out with all the different parties involved. One set of gates were left unlocked at night so Night Hunters, coon and fox could go in and hunt.

Our club also bought some coon from Iowa I think was the state to restock our coon population. We did that a number of years This was when you could still do that.

We'd have out monthly meeting the First Monday of the month. Always a fun time if you hunted to meet up with people you knew but maybe didn't see much.

We'd have club hunts and buddy hunts. The buddy hunts were fun. Would be a cast of 4 with 2 people of each team. We might have 5 or 6 casts for the buddy hunts.

When we had our first UKC licensed hunt and show we also had a grade hunt and show giving the same amount of trophies to the grade part. 1st -10th in the Nite Hunt and also gave Best of Breed Trophies Plus Show for the Grade dogs.

The first few UKC Hunts and Shows we had we hunted 100 Registered Dogs and 100 Grade Dogs. The grade dog entry started to decline fairly quickly as more and more people were getting interested in the Registered dogs.

We'd have Coon Sacking contests. That was fun if you was watching. Two people would team up and try to bag a live wild coon that was turned loose in a ring.

We would also have two different treeing contests. One count the barks and another one that had a ring around the tree and if a dogs foot stepped over the ring they were out.

Our licensed hunts and shows were a full day of doing things and a lot of fun. The kids really loved coming because there was so much for them to do and see.

Our club back then was like Paul said a kind of good will ambassador to the area plus sticking up for the rights of night hunters. Sorry to have rambled so much.

I didn't read every post on this thread but it should be mentioned that many, if not most of the clubs in my area are "coon hunter/conservation" clubs or just conservation clubs that hold coon hound events. These clubs have many projects they sponsor and support that are not directly involved with nite hunts. Conservation projects, 4-H support, working with the DNR, etc. Our club (Wyatt Consevation Coonhunters Club) hosts 15 or more hunts per year and yet our average monthly club meeting spends less than 25% of it's time discussing hunts and many meeting never see it even brought up. Ours is much more than just a coon hunt club.
