-- I'm thinking about giving it up. (http://forums.ukcdogs.com/showthread.php?threadid=928282666)
I'm thinking about giving it up.
I went to feed today and one of my favorite pups got his head through a hole in the kennel and hung himself. Dang shame, one of my best hunting places is lost to a sub division. Just moved and got plenty of work to do and long hours at work just ain't a good combination for coon hunting. I am hurting Shadow more than helping her right now, she needs the piss hunted out of her and I just ain't getting it done. I really am thinking about keeping one pup and my cur dogs and just squirrel hunt and occasionally coon hunt? Any of you guys ever get discusted with like this?

Is it a age thing or burnout?
I am 42 my feet hurt, knees ache, back burns and I hunt mainly for the fun of it but like John said it just ain't fun any more. I can take my boy and his cur dogs out or his beagles and we have a blast, people don't mind you doing that anywhere. I may keep my pup and one older female I got out of Thunderstick and pleasure hunt 3-4 times a month but other than that I am done with the hunts, I may check out some squirrel hunts they are getting more and more popular and plenty of fun too. You guys ever try any of them?

In 1999 my old dog died, and after trying out several dogs I couldn't find anything that pleased me so I quit. I had owned registered black and tans since 1975. I fought game chickens as well so that took up my time. They passed so many laws making it a felony to fight I gave up that sport as well. My old hunting buddy got me a pup year before last and I have started back full bore. A lot of the hunting grounds are not available now, two have been turned into golf courses, one dairy went out of business and leases his land to a row crop farmer that has workers that deer hunt and they will not let me hunt. I'm 61 years old and since I have started back I enjoy it more than ever, I hunt 4, 5, or 6 nights a week. I had a massive heart attack 2 1/2 years ago, I'm diabetic and had cancer and look at life differently. I say get away from the comp hunts and enjoy coon hunting for the pleasure of hunting. Listen to that dog strike, trail and tree just for the joy of listening to hound music.
Guys if ya been hunting these ole black dogs for any length of time its more like an incurable disease!!!
I broke my neck way back in 1990 and been a quadriplegic in a wheelchair (as most of yall know) and still plan to load my old crippled butt up in my truck for as long as I'm alive and have these good young guys to handle my culls for me. I've got the least business of anyone I know of to be out there setting in the pickup and listening to the run and tree a coon sometimes I'm even able to drive up to the tree before the others can get there. LOL
I've been addicted to coonhunting and hounds as long as memory serves me and love it so I see no reason for giving it up until I die.

i got to where i don't like killing animals for no good reason and began to wonder what business i had hunting coon at all. so i just decided i wasn't going to kill them and if my dogs still treed that fine and i'd go to see it. they still enjoy hunting as much as ever. since we have few coons here they run fox a lot. i like that too. i dont' have to kill anything and many times i see the fox and the race is so close i can follow along the side of the road and hear them breath, see their flashing lights and it's like being there with them. that's great. if you haven't tried it i suggest you do. the dogs do a lot of running and love it and you can get real close to the action. i miss the adventure of going to some god forsaken place to get to the tree but then sometimes i do so things work out.

You are an inspiration Loren
And you are right, we should be thankful for our health, we sometimes forget there is others out there with far worse health than others and they are happy to do it. Thanks again bud. And you keep em in the woods. Have a blessed Thanksgiving.

I think it's a matter of having a hound that you love to hunt. When you have the kind of dog that pleases you it's hard to stay out of the woods. You can't think of anything else but getting to the woods and cutting that dog loose. When your hunting dogs that you don't care for or have to worry about what the dog is going to do each nite it tends to make you not want to hunt. The more time you put into your dogs the more enjoyment you will get out of them if you are honest to yourself in regards to rather the dog is truley going to make the kind of hound you enjoy. Too many people put time into dogs that just are not going to make it and thats no fun at all. Some people just can't train dogs and are better off spending a little money and buy a dog that would better suit them. Myself, I enjoy starting pups once they start doing little things rite I can't stay out of the woods. When I get dogs to the point that they run and tree everytime out I get board with them they fun's over for me. I use to get burnned out but when I got a line of dogs that worked for me I found that I can't sit at home for more than 3 or 4 days before I have that itch again.
before you quit coonhunting, ask yourself what you'll do with your time. if you're not careful you'll end up watching a lot of tv or drinking or otherwise wasting time. it's hard to find a hobby you enjoy. starting over, from zero is difficult. consider hunting in a different place or different line of dogs.

Hey Marvin its Preston, I hate to hear that about your pup. I know its hard to deal with things like that because my 2 walkers hung themselves before I got Cope off of you. If you ever need a place to hunt or someone to go with you have my number. My place is crawling with coons and you should come up and see how Cope is doing. He's treed 4 this year by himself on just a couple of turn outs so I'm pretty proud. Take it easy, and if you ever need anyone to hunt Shadow I can come get her and run her feet raw for a few weeks with this pup haha. Cope needs a good dog like her to hunt with.
For you that are thinking of quitting, I wonder how old you were when you started following hounds. I've heard that many people start hunting dogs later in life that never hunted with dogs as a kid. many of those people get hot and heavy into hunting and then lose interest. where as people who got exposed to it as a kid it's imprinted on them and it's more of a natural thing to do. now, i know there are pleanty of exceptions but other than that.
i know people that grew up watching their parents eating blue claw crabs and as soon as they could they learned to eat them too. as adults they must have their crabs. then there are those that learn to like them as adults but can take or leave them.

Well good question.
I have hunted since I was 13 always had dogs, bought and paid for a brand new ford truck in 87 with coon hides, been through many good women over these Hounds, so yeah it is instilled, you know you got it bad to miss Sr. Prom in high school to go compete in a night hunt. Thanks Preston, I think I'm just going through a mid life crises or stressed out? I been running these cur dogs and now ready to turn them hounds loose.

I have vented now. Feel better
Might have messed up selling Shadow? But this dang Dancin Creek Black Reba has me fired up Ron, cut her and a English pup loose tonight she struck and the pup struck, my buddy said here goes a opossum ( he says that ever time I get first strike) them two drove a track 1.3/4 mile and had a 20 lb boar all by there self. That's coon hunting they got stumped in a creek the pup was treeing so I went on in to em, ol Reba checked 4 trees while I was there watching she never gave a bark till she moved on across then she struck that pulled the pup to her and it was on. Dang I love this female, she is making it fun again. Coming back to the truck she struck on the leash, I cut em again and it ended up in a den. But still it's been forever since I had that to happen, only thing Reba wants to meet you off the tree but she goes right back don't know how to get a 5 y&r old to change a bad habit but I'm happy with her. And yes it makes a difference when you enjoy the dog you are chasing.
