6-8 yr olds in youth hunts

I am not wanting to start an argument just want some opinions. I am just woundering how people feel about making a 6-8 age group in the youth hunts. My reasoning behind this is I have been to many youth hunts where these little ones are hanging on dads belt loop or holding there hand. They look at their dad for what to do.( makes you wounder who is really calling the dog.) When they get to the tree they are unable to shine the tree. The other night a little 6 y/o girl with her light sitting sideways on her head and light not even in the tree yells out I see the coon. Some of these need more help than what the rules allow for. thanks for you thoughts and opinions.

They are little kids . I am just fine with them and dad beating me or my kid.

There kids out spending time with there dad-mom. I have hunted with grown men that ask is that my dog or your dog. Unless your hunting in the youth world hunt who really cares?

my 8 yr old (or i should say I) won our cast in the st.jude youth hunt..every kid there was around his age and every dad was pokin when they needed to make a call. ITS JUST FOR FUN WHO CARES ABOUT RULES LET EM BE KIDS!!!

youth hunts

I have juged a lot of youth hunts and I make the kids stay up front with me when there calling the dogs. Now my son is old enuf to hunt. I stand back and lisen hes hunting the dog not me . He just won the nc state youth hunt and done it all own his own at 7 years old. just let them have fun win or lose

I say the same thing. It's good to see them out there with there family learning the rules and being outdoors comp or pleasure hunting. Instead of playing video games and watching tv.

I think we need to thank the Dad's and Mom's for taking the time to spend with there kids at these youth hunts. Even if they help there kids make a call on there dog. To me it's about time with the kids and having fun. I soon hope to take my son to the hunts and just try to teach him to be a good sport, have fun win or loose. I myself see nothing wrong with helping a 6 or 8 year old getting some help and hope that whoever we drew out with would do the same for there boy or girl or wouldn't have a problem with me doing it until he gets a feel of the rules and learns what it's all about.

Let me clear my qusetion. I am not opposed to them hunting. I am 100% in favor of them being in the woods, these kids are the future of this sport. Many have comented on letting mom or dad help. I agree with this. I am saying lets put them in a cast together and let their parents help and teach them. I have seen a cast in the youth hunt where they let them shine for the first 5 on the tree with no help and if the coon wasn't seen then the parent helped shine the last 5. This worked out very well. I feel some would be less intimidated if the are with kids their own age and size. I too have to thank my mother who was a single parent after the death of my dad at age 3 for buying me my first dog and going to the woods with me. now 42 yrs later I have taught my 4 kids to hunt and now I hope to do the same with my grand kids.

I would like to see the youth groups split into 3 divisions. Let the parents help the young ones. It is suppose to be for fun, The problem we have had in our club with the youth hunts is some guys are trying to put titles on their dogs, so they cheat to win. You would not believe some of the things these guys have pulled. Let the parents or whomever, help the kids call the dogs in the young class, just don't award points towards the titles. Teach the kids the right way to hunt in the hunts. Teach them sportsmanship

timedurks... you must have hunted at the events in my area! I totally agree with you on taking the title options away in the youth and encouraging the sportsmanship aspect and learning what needs to be done when & how. I agree there should be a peewee division =) my now 14 yr old daughter has been egarly hunting and calling her own dog since she was 4. This past weekend I was at a yep event and a 6 yr old was in a cast with a 12 yr old not exactly a level playing field mentally yet. I admit I LOVE the 90 min hunt time, great middle ground.

It sure wouldn't hurt to tighten up the age groups its hard for a 6 year old to call a dog, compared to 11 year old, seen it in the three youth casts I've been on.

I think if you change the age groups theres gonna be ALOT of 7-8 year olds in in youth hunts!

Youth hunt

I was a guide on a cast for the WV State youth hunt on June 16.I was fortunate enough to get the youngest kids 6-12 i believe.These kids called there dogs perfect and were more mature than adults ive heard about.Thanks to those young hunters who showed ME what this sport is about!

I agree that it would be a good thing to do. My son is looking forward to trying hand at the youth events this coming season. The question is how many groups/age ranges?

I agree there should be three divisions also. 5-9, 10-13, and 14-18, that way each group only has a 3-4 year age difference. Both my son and my friend's son hunted in the 12 and under as 11-12 year olds and they clearly had an advantage over the 5-6 year olds. Fortunately they were both good sportsmen and pointed out every coon regardless who's dog treed it.

It's fine as long as they are well behaved. Unfortunately many of them aren't. Pleasure hunting should be more of a priority at this age. 90 min time limit was a good decision.

is this not a sport?last i knew it was and praticing for the hunts is no different then practcing for any other sport.i know a few young guys 10 years old and younger that have put alot of time in the woods and practice if they want to go to youth hunts and it would not be fair to them or other little ones that get out and practice if adults got to help!!as far as shining the tree goes then the judge is there to help just as a ump or ref would be in any other sport.and i do believe ukc is fine with letting adults help handle the dogs at the tree or if some other feak thang may happen during the night.adults should get the youth out and practice not try and cheat another youth that has been putting his time in the woods! just my thought and not trying to make anyone mad!! one of the biggest thang we can do as adults is teach the youth to ask questions if they dont no or under stand a rule it is the judges duty to help them understand.
