Just wanderin if there is any good hunting round that area, or any public land that would be worth coon hunting. I also deer hunt so if theres any good places for that id be interested also. Huntin

I live just south of Traverse City (15 miles) There is lots of state land in this area to hunt. Not a large coon population, but plenty of land to air out your dogs. Plenty of deer hunters in the fall as well. I don't deer hunt, but i'm sure you can find a place to hang a stand. Look me up when you make your way up here.

oh yeah what kind of trash is there for the dogs to run? any thing has to be better than these armadilloes we got down here, you litrally kick 5 or 6 out of your way on the way to each tree.

A bear might tear him up if he gets gritty and not smart but I'll bet the Porkys cause you more grieve. Don't go out without a pair of pliers in your pocket or at least in your truck. Like any other trash once their broke it's not a problem but don't be shooting eyes out without your dog tied up.

ps It's great place in the summer time and fall and you may even like the winters.

About the only kind of trash we don't have is dillers. Like the man said, porky's will be a big problem for a while.

ive hunted wv

but never hunted farther north then ohio. i hope he dont like porkys, he dont chase bear i broke him off that when i was in wv. he dont do skunks, possums, dillers, deer. so i guess ill see if he chases porkys and fishers if you got them.

Don't know about Fishers , never seen one , but there's seldom much chase to a porky . Just a lot of shaking, baying or treeing. Porkys don't know how to hurry.

Posted by bluetickjake on 02-16-2011 12:42 AM:

Hope to

Well i hope theres not to many porkys quills for me to pull out while im there. I look forward to meeting some of you folks around that area. I like to travel a little too so if theres anyone in the UP or within 3 hours or so of traverse city that knows of good public land to chase a few ringtails let me know.

I never saw a "broke" dog that wouldn't bump a porky first time he comes across one. Porcupines STINK and dogs can't resist 'em. Like Dale said, porkies won't try to outrun a dog. Some dogs get a few in the nose and never mess with them again but some will stretch a porky and then the rest of your night is spent pulling quills. Don't freak out if your dog gets quills, just get out the pliers and get to pulling. Be careful to pull them straight out so they don't break off and check the mouth, tongue, gums, between the teeth and the throat. Sometimes quills will continue to show up for months after the encounter.

I usually see a porky or two every night while road hunting my dogs. I cured their curiosity with a few hard pops with an e-collar now they road right past them.

Hopefully your dog won't mess with them but I'd be surprised.

When you get there i would suguest you look up Shaun Paton . I have known him for quite some time now and hunted and stayed with him and his family. NONE BETTER trust him with my life. O by the way better listen to him about them porkeys. In closing let me say the hunts with Shaun will be etched in my memory untill I am dead. O yea porkeys verses possum take a possun any day. Good luck in your move.Winter I can't tell you about I live in Ga but If you talke to Shaun TODAY and ask him how are you doing he will say, GETTING READY FOR THAT D&*^$#@ WINTER, See you down the road H L Meyer

huntin

Thank you very much for the kind words H.L. It's sure nice to know that these sorry old hounds can make us some life long friends. We are still fighting the snow here. Still have close to 2 feet in the woods. The fields are getting bare. I coonhunted tues night and ended up putting on my snowshoes to walk to the dogs. Aint been able to hunt very much as my Dads cancer has come back and I have alot on the table right now. Take care and please give your wife a hug for me and tell her hello. Come north, we'll build a fire at the cabin and turn them loose.

If you do have any porkie problems, at least Shaun has the trick for pulling quills. I know I owe him a big thanks for that! I've had to use it several times on the bird dogs.

thought id check in with yall

been coon hunting the ole dog near buckley , mi niw(where i live now) dont know if theres just no porkeys around in the state land next to the house or if the dog just wont chace em..... i was lookin forward to seein one up close but still havent... just on the roadside dead. There are deffinately plenty of coon to go around here though! ive hunted probly 12 or 13 times since mid july and he's struck a track within 10 minutes of every turnout and most have been running anywhere from 200 to 800 yard according to the garmin. from the looks of a few of them i think there big deffinatly over 10 pounds wich is bigger than any i ever treed in mississsippi. I cant wait till fall is here and the leaves are off. Right now there all in the blackberrys every time. found some killer bow hunting spots too while out there wanderin around in the dark,,,, just all the two track roads have me worried that when deer season comes i wont be able to get far enough away off the paths and the 4 wheelers are gonna come bombin up through there scarin all the deer? ill just have to see.
