TNridgerunner

what is canned food supposed to for putting weight on a dog tops it's only 10 percent protein it's fat content is very low and most is 80 percent moisture which is water.
canned dog food is worthless only thing it does is flavor food and most females coming off pups will eat anything to regain any weight loss
the post above that mentions puppy food just before delivering pups and while there nursing will keep a female in good flesh and putting her back on her usual food will have her right back to before she had the pups

Here's the recipe I found online and then the one I actually used. I can tell you from experience that it really works. Just keep feeding good quality food everyday plus 1 satin ball a day and you'll see a difference within a week.

Satin Balls Full Recipe
10 lbs cheap hamburger (high fat %)
1 large box Total cereal (about 12 cups cereal)
1 large box uncooked oatmeal (about 15 cups oats)
10 raw eggs
1 15oz jar wheat germ
10 packages Knox unflavored gelatin
1 and 1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 and 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses
Pinch of salt
Notes:"Whole Wheat Total" cereal (blue box) comes in large 1 lb 2 oz size (about 12 cups settled) and a smaller 12 oz size (about 8 cups cereal), which would work in Little Dog or Half Recipe. But in the long run, the large size is more economical. Don't get Raisin Total or Lo Carb Total.Uncooked Oatmeal like "Quaker Old Fashioned Oats" and less expensive supermarket house brand, come in large 2 lb 10oz size (15 cups oats) or smaller 18 oz size (about 7 cups oats). 15oz jar of wheat germ is about 4 cups. Some stores only carry a 12oz jar of wheat germ, which contains about 3 and 1/4 cups of it.

My recipe:
1 family pack(app. 6lbs) ground burger
12oz jar of wheat germ
1 dozen eggs
1/2 loaf stale white bread
1/2 loaf stale wheat bread
a little bit of karo just to sweeten it some. im sure too much karo would mess with their stomach so i didnt put much.i made the balls about 2-3 inches in diameter and got 34 balls.

I feed puppy chow while pregnant and while nursing and also give her milk replacer either mixed into liquid or mixed in dry with dog food to help her put weight back on works good, helps her make good milk and doing this in my latest litter the 2 1/2 year old momma produced enough milk to keep the entire litter of 11 alive and well (it was her first litter too!!). So it seems to work for me!

the 10 to a dozen eggs a day be gettin alittle high wouldnt it if you feed it for bout a couple months unless you got a hen house or get the eggs free .................. i think useing calf moma mixed in dry dog food work wonders seen a couple females looks in good shape while sucking pups or after jmo.

female

Keep her worm free and on good feed and a automatic feeder , plenty of water and she won't loose weight nursing a dozen !! If need be feed her soaked food once daily with goats milk. Plus all the above !

Bawl_track, that recipe is for a big batch of satin balls, not a serving, lol. I use a dozen in my recipe and made 34 balls.

Canned dog food , because of it's moisture content and such ... reads different than dry ... you have to pretty much double the protein and fat on the label to get the right comparison to dry ..

It's real hard to beat just putting a little lard or shortening on their feed to fatten a dog up ... look what it does to people , lol.

Dog Chow .. that junk is just corn and bone meal ... chicken food at best.

that is what we always have used for dogs that needed weight put back on, and for pregnant dogs. plus make sure they are de-wormed. it has always work for us, plus it is not that expensed. are dry food is sexton brother in the white bag, 24/18 I believe. thanks

This is the smartest answer. You go to adding stuff and you will create an unbalanced diet.

I've got a nursing female with a litter of 12, almost 2 week old pups. The pups are growing fast and she is GAINING weight.

She's on a self feeder with all the Enhance (24/18) dog feed she can eat.

Some dogs do alright in a self feeder ... but , the trick is that they should not eat more food in a 24hr period than they can digest .

If that happens , you get a fat dog that is actually in bad shape ... it takes longer to digest the stuff that makes muscle than the sugars and such .... so , once you start pushing food through ... the old stuff has to go before it's completely digested to make room for more .
