Help Hound Hit By Car

Saturday night my dog was hit by a car while hunting. I took her to the vet an hour later. She had pulled ligiments in her hip ball and socket on the right side and on the left side a small fracture in the pelvis. She had a lot of bruising including some blood on the lungs. I picked her up from the Vet on Sunday evening. She couldn't walk but could stand for a moment or so and her tail was moving. I noticed a lot of yelping as I moved her around until Tuesday morning and it appeared as if the pain was gone. Now she can only stand on her front legs and pull herself around. Her tail does not move on its on.

QUESTION: What could be going on? She appeared to be getting better. She has a tiny reflex on both legs when they are touched be very small reflex and her tail is just limp.

I can't take her until tommorrow, but I am worried and thought some advice would be good, lay it on me even if it hurts.

It sounds as though there is some swelling that is pinching off or blocking a nerve - spinal inflammation can sometimes take a couple of days to get to the point of causing symptoms. Did the vet put the dog on any anti-inflammatory drugs, like prednisone? If not, you could give her one 125 mg Alleve from the drugstore, keep her calm and quiet tonight, and get her back to the vets first thing in the morning.
If it is caused by inflammation, she will respond to drugs and continue to recover. The other, not so promising, possibility is that there is undected damage to the spinal cord, such as a slipped disc - some of those problems are treatable, some not. However, if you are not happy with your vet's diagnosis and recommendations, I would seek a second opinion before decided to put her down.
I would suggest you ask your vet to xray the lower spine, and if necessary, send them off to a radiologist or neurologist for a consult (that usually costs less then having them taken in the first place, and well worth the money.

I forgot to mention - the fact that there is some reaction in the legs is a good sign, it generally means the spinal cord is not beyond repair. The best way to check is to pinch the webbing between the toes - hard, dig a fingernail in - you should get a jerk reaction as she tries to pull the foot away. Check each foot separately, use the same amount of force on each foot, and compare the reactions - that info can help the vet narrow down the source of the problem....

I checked as you described. On her right leg she moved it pretty good and whimpered and moved her head toward that leg and started licking it. The left leg seemed to get no reaction.

She has been at the Vet since 8:20. He told me to leave her there overnight but he would call me after he had some observation time. He said hopefully he'd know something this evening. It makes a person realize how important these old hounds mean to a man. I hope for the best.

sounds like it's swelling of the spinal cord to me...on ppl they can give a steroid shot to keep the swelling in check (sometimes) hope she gets back to normal.

I had i hound hit in the road on 11-2-07 and suffered a broken pelvis, and some ligiment damage. Vet looked her over, x rayed, and told me 8 weeks of minimal movement, no more than going to the bathroom and to eat, thats it. She seemed to be doing better after about a week, and then did exactly what your hound is doing, trying to pull herself with just her front feet. I helped her up and to lay down, yelped a lot when she was moved, but after about the 15th of December she was able to move fine, and she was even back out hunting by the first of February, not as hard or as deep as she was, but she still hunted well, Just give hound some time and she will be fine.

She was put to sleep by the vets recomendation around 5:00pm. He did some more x-rays and found some thing broken in her spine not seen before in earlier x-rays. Her tail was dead at the visit today. It was tough on all of us. We only have Jack left since Jill passed today. Thanks for all the support and helpful advice.

I'm very glad you had the time with her you did. She must have known how much she was loved, they always do. She'll live on in your memories and in your hearts. She takes a part of you with her as well and will never be lonely, sick or old. She will wait patiently for her loved ones to greet her at the Big Old Tree.
