I'm working right now on a feature article that will appear in the September issue of CB that will answer these questions and more. I believe Cooner will also feature the program that same month. Stay tuned......

Hunt Test
Todd,
I really would have liked to have joined you at Belleview. I have some suggestions for this program, if you have not locked things in yet. PM me if your interested.

THE ONLY REQUEST I HAVE FOR THE TEST IS TO MAKE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE APPROVED THROUGH UKC IN ORDER TO BE THE JUDGE. WE ALL KNOW THAT PEOPLE WILL ABUSE THE PRIVILAGE TO JUDGE A DOG AND EVERY DOG OUT THERE WILL END UP WITH A HTX TITLE ON THE END OF ITS NAME.

Basically the test is conducted like the single registration test.
The dog has to prove it can track and tree a wild coon without having more than 2 faults (I think it is 2) during the 1 hour of required hunt time. I believe that is how Allen explained it during National Redbone Days.
If the dog passes the test then it will get a title tacked on to its name. I think it is HTX for hunting test excellence.

They should have to get this title before entering any other night hunts!!!!!!!!
No I didnt see that but they will have to run and tree a coon alone!!! Thats all I'm going on.... Should have to do that before they are entered in a night hunt... I dont imagine the faults will be very much...
who is going to judge the test? local clubs, UKC reps, MOH, breed acssocistions, ect? just wondering who. i think this is a great idea and i thinnk a dog ought to prove it can tree a coon on its own before being able to be entered into a night champion cast or even have that title.
Our club President got a call from Allen last week explaining the new Hunt Test deal and wanting our club to discuss it and get back. Many of the members discussed it last night at our Walker Sectional hunt. The main thing I heard said was that it was an insult to every hunter that put in the work, time, travel and money to earn a REAL hunt title. The general consenses I got was that the hunt test is just a way to get a title for an owner that is too sorry to go out an earn one by putting his dog out where others can see it perform or not perform. These hunt test fans will always come back that they won't enter a hunt because of all the cheating, mean dogs, blah blah blah....but excuse are like you know what. I'm sure our club will vote to boycot the whole hunt test thing and I'm just as sure UKC will go right ahead with it. There is definately a pile of money to be made off of it. I just hope that after they get it going, they will not only publish the names of the dogs that pass and get the title, but also the names of the dogs that failed.
I don't know that much about it, but I think its an interesting idea.
Face, it comp. hunts are becoming more and more a game all the time. The way some kennel clubs are copying others programs and going, it won't be long before their events have as much to do with a coonhound treeing a coon as greyhound racing has to catching rabbits.
I believe there is definitely a void right now for something of this nature. Maybe the first try won't be too smooth, but its a concept worth pursuing, imo.

They have already stated that the test will involve treeing one coon in a set amount of time. Big Deal!!! There are thousands of dogs out there that can do that. And many of them aren't worth the price of one bag of Ole Roy.
How many will go out and slap down cash for a new dog without hunting it because it has a hunt test degree and quickly come to realize they would have been just as well off to have called Cecil Bowen?
Come to think of it, I might just have something there. Buy them buy the gross dirt cheap from Cecil, run'em thru a hunt test, triple your money fast as you can shove'em out the barn door.
I have a copy of the test at home and I think it is a good idea. Entering a dog in a nite hunt does not really mean they can tree a coon. It may just mean that they are good me-to dogs.
With this test it shows people that the dog can track and tree a coon by itself.
As far as feeders go I believe it says no feeders. If you are caught dropping a dog on a feeder during this test then the test is over and you fail.
Faults include: treeing off game, slick treeing, quiting the track, leaving the tree, ect....
The faults are basically the same as what you would be minused for in a night hunt, except if you commit them in the hunt test you are failed, not minused.
Some people do not like going to the hunts because there are alot of sore losers, unsportsman like people and cheaters. So this test is a good way to show people that the dog can tree a coon.

Well Red, talk is ever so CHEAP! I hunt in enough hunts to know how tough it is to win with a real coondog cause I drew out with three of them last might. I have been beat by a me-too scorecard dog. I have been beat 10 times as often by a dog that was flatout better than mine. If you think you can raise the stature of the hunt test by downing the nite hunt dogs, you are just showing how much you DON'T know about nite hunts..
That's all I'm gonna say on this one.
Over and out.
Good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
really, where did you find them?

3 REAL LIVE "COONDOGS" in a cast? Hell, I haven't even seen 3 in years, much less all in one place. Your definition of "COONDOG" must be a lot different than mine and most of the people that i know.
No, I don't think this will cheapen the Night Hunt Titles any at all, it will simply add something more to the list of overall titles that mean less and less every time they add one more.
People, People, People, Please
Why is this getting such a debate? If you don't like the program, then don't enter them. Let someone else try it, that is interested in the program. Cream rises to the top. Let's see if this program has merit a year or two down the road. By that time, we should be able to tell if the program is going to work or not. The one's that don't think it will make a dog better, then don't pay attention to the HTX on the paper. Just food for thought, how many of you were throwing rotten tomatos at the Performance Program when it started? See what that has grown into.
