We like Diamond W and Smokey River breeding. We have never had a problem with off game or slicks. Our hounds have been accurate hunters that have to be drug off a tree. Amy

I dont believe the question was where did these lines start. I believe the fella asked what line had and still has the most impact. With nearly a thousand GR Nts and Nt CHs. Three Autum Oaks wins, a few UKC world top twenty placements, two Grand Americans, twenty or so state championships and a couple Purina top five and one Purina winner. I would say Dave Dean and his Northern Blue Hammer dogs would carry that distinction hands down. After nearly forty years and 21 generations later, I dont believe any one person will come close to what he has done with treedogs. Just my opinion as asked in the question but hard to find a competitor none the less. Dave

HAMMER BLOOD NO DOUBT

Has been used in a lot of kennels and has stood the test of time. Time has past by since my first post on these hounds and at first I would really tell it like it was then no one would agree with me as to how important this line of hounds really were to the bluetick breed. People argued with me as how unimportant they were and I got e mails not so nice as to what the Hammer line was really made up of. I continued praising this line with very little support of them just the negative usual stuff that how one buying a Hammer dog didn't know what you would be getting a lot of the negative talk coming from right in the Hammer kennel back door or within a short drive. Then I turned the tide and talked as if I did not like this line and how unimportant I thought it wasn't to the breed and sure enough I got arguments then from most of the people that had down graded them from the start as of how good they were then I got called whatever, whoever, and a lot of other names and I have sit back and watched some of you go from not liking this line to liking it......What is up with this kind of so called friendship ?????????????????????I got accused of downing Dave Dean as a person never nver never did I say anything but good things about this man and his knowledge of coon hounds and a lot of other things in this world......He sure knows the real Hammer dog lovers............ Like me or not and I could care less as to what you have called me or think of me so don't go there to defend your ignorence of changing your minds in the middle of the stream. Each of you that have called me names cursed me wanted to whip me, threaten to kill me so be it. I know how many each of you have killed, and how many you beat to death with a cotton ball. You are a mean bunch but remember GOD LOVES YOU.........

the way I see it

Dave Dean, Bill Utchman and his sons, are the ones who have made the breed better in recent history. There are several that have used the work these folks have done to produce good hounds.. Had Vaughn lived longer you would have seen more come from him as well.

I would say in the world of competetion it would have to be Hammer. They have a record that would be hard to match. Remember the Jet line, and Levi dogs came from Hammer breeding. It is hard to find a modern day Smokey River Dog without Hammer blood.

I have stayed with the old Smokey River dogs for many years, and the people that I know are not really into competetion all that much. Hoss & Jazz were back to back breed champions in the UKC world champ. in 91,92. They were littermates and this was the first and only time that was accomplished. ( of any breed)

I think alot of it depends on the kind of hunting you want to do, such as coon........bear.........other big game species; how much nose you like, size and mouth..ect. ???? I know for a fact these Smokey River hounds have what it takes to hunt big game successfully. Not saying the others do not, but I have not had as much experience with the others.

I have hunted hunted with them all (different breeds), and all around you can't beat a blue hound.

How Far Back?

We have a Male Bluetick out of Barr's Blazing Star...who is a direct daughter out of NiteCH Smokey River JBS Chief. How far back would I have to go to find Hammer?

We believe in Smokey River, and the Utchman line completely. Wouldn't have anything in our kennel but these lines. I myself, drove from Northern Ohio to Southern Missouri to Mr. Wilbern Utchman's place to do just that, fill our kennel. Came back with 2 fine lookin hounds, this will be their first season in the woods.

Good Luck on training them Dave, one at a time aint bad, but 2?!

God Bless all our friends, family and coonhunters this season, please be careful, but yet have a good time, you are all in our prayers.
