Coon catchin?????

I was wondering how to catch coons in a live trap to train dogs with. How big should a trap be? What is the best kind? What do you use for bait? Do you have to do anything special to the trap before you take it out to set it.

about 40 dollars buys a coon live trap at tractor supply there strong and work real well i use corn thats been soaked for a day drain off water and pour a small bottle of vanilla extract on the corn it brings coon in from quite a distance set the trap near a stream and you should get one every time you set it even in thin coon,

Bait

You do not have to take the time to sour corn. You can put the vanilla extract on a piece of loaf bred. I use sardines and only sardines. Sure you will get some possoms, but shoot them and soon enough you will get a coon. Do not listen to any krap, that sweet stuff won't catch possoms because it will. You will get more coons faster with sardines period! Buy yourself a havahart trap with the spring loaded door! Happy trapping.

40 dollar trap

a coon trap is usually around 40 bucks. you just got to trap where coons are to catch one quickly. what i do is set my trap at work because we have a dumpster behind the building and them coons hit that dumpster all the time so i just set my trap back in the little grove of trees behind the dumpster and i can catch one bout every night. but you can catch em in the woods. it just usually takes time and killin a few possum because most of the time possum will get to the trap before a coon will get near it. a little trick you can do is take a regular ole tire and hang it from a tree so that its about a foot and a half off the ground. put some corn in there and pour water all over it so that the corn is submerged in water. that corn will sour and them coon love soured corn and a possum wont hardly touch it in my experience and i have alot of possum in my neck of the woods. then you get the coon comin in to the soured corn and then just set ya a trap and you will catch one pretty quick then. and the tire feeder will be a good place to take your young dogs to when your huntin to strike an easy track off of. so ya kill two birds with one stone. hope it works for ya

Catfood, tuna, sardines, peanut and jelly sandwich, and the yucky smelling catfish bait nuggets (blood and cheese) all work great. Amy

i have found the odor from soured corn travels further than plain corn also the vanills extrct will even catch coon in a corn field full of corn as far as sardines in areas like i live in will catch more feral cats than coon as the streams are full of fish the coon don't take to them here

I understand where your coming from. Different geographical locations call for different manuvers. Here we do not have large plots of corn to deal with or feral cats. Just possoms and stray dogs. I do keep soured corn in my feeders, and if I really need a coon I will set a trap with sardines in it. Very rarely will you get a coon around here (quickly) with anything sweet, unless it is next to a dumpster.

bait

peanutbutter, jelly, any kind of sweets. the best things about useing sweets is #1 coons love it #2 your less likely to catch a cat, or a possume, or a skunk. #3 it's easy, and least exp bait. to bait traps with. i've made everybody a beliver of it when i showed them. i preffer grape jelly

If you really want to catch them...find an area...that you wouldn't want to hunt...ie: near a road, near someone else's property...etc...and put a feeder there...that will draw them in...and then use marshmallows in your trap...I found the big ones work better...LOL....and then sprinkle grape kool-aid on top of the trap...also put a couple handfuls of leaves on top of the trap to conceal it a little....we catch one a night this way and then release them for the pups in areas we can hunt.

The trap should be bgi enought for the coon to get in or it will pu**** around and turn it over..The best bait I use is peanut butter coverd on bread....Also i usually put some 10 w-40 on all the hinges so it will set off not get stuck
