Cherry Eye?

Got a pup that I think has developed cherry eye. Haven't seen that before in a hound. He's five weeks old, and it just started swelling Sat. Meant to call the vet today, but got behind canning.
Wondering if anybody else has had this in a young pup? That's just what it looks like to me, just the little bump swell, no puss, drainage, or any other symptoms.
Haven't had to correct this before, what does this usually cost? Also, will it prevent him from being able to bench show?

my vet fixed one for me i think it was $100 ?
looked good couldn't tell she ever had one !!!

UKC rules state

that altering a dog's appearance by correcting a cherry eye problem for show purposes is prohibited. It IS an inherited problem.

We have never had a pup with this, it isn't either dogs first litter so shouldn't it have happened before?

Not necessarily

If it's a recessive, you may not see it again unless you "double up" on the combination that produced the cherry eye. If you breed this dog with the cherry eye, you will contribute the problem to the gene pool of future generations.

Our vet did my dobermans for $50. gives u some eye creme in a tube to keep in the eye to keep it from gettin to dry.

Had it in some B & T's

I have always been told not to have it fixed. Just keep it clean and leave it alone. Vet said if it was removed or repaired it would cause the eye to stay irritated and dry, and would have to apply drops or creme daily. Usually the part that pops up is the tear duct.

Cherry eye and umbilical hernias........you will see it more and more because both can be fixed to where they are basicly undetectable and then they get bred and the problem gets bigger.
Dogs with either problem should be nuetered but of course almost no will be.

Went to the vet today, had an eye infection. That was nice, only cost $33.50. Said the ointment every day for a week should clear it up. Cherry eye surgery could have been $400! Asked about cherry eye being hereditary since there are so many different opinions on here. He said that he has heard that before, but that it is not true. He did say that some breeds are more prone to it then others, such as Cocker Spaniels... but that it is not hereditary and normal repair does not constitute as a surgery since the dog is not put under anesthetic, there are no stitches, and no post care meds. This is the case where it is just snipped off with the help of local anesthetic, only numbing that part of the face. However, he said that some cases grow into the cartilidge and have to be surgically removed. They then remove that tear duct, thus surgically altering the dog. So I guess that would determine whither or not the dog would be eligible for show if you want to get technical about it... he consulted with another vet just to make sure and they both agreed. I'm just glad that wasn't what we had... hard to justify $400 eye surgery on a 5 week old pup that hasn't been sold yet....

BTW...

There is nothing in the UKC rules that states a dog with cherry eye can not be shown.

22. The following is NOT allowed:
a. Dyeing or in any manner changing a dog’s hair color.

b. Altering of nose, eye or lip pigment color.

c. Surgery to cover a genetic or structural fault, such as ears, eyes, muscular or skeletal.

d. Grooming, grooming tools, spray bottles or wiping cloths are not allowed in the ring.

26. Dogs will be disqualified if male is castrated or female is spayed.

27. A male shall be disqualified if monorchid or cryptorchid (lacking two normal, descended testicles in the scrotum).

28. A dog will be disqualified if it is determined to be deaf or blind.

Since cherry eye is nothing more than an inflamation of the tear duct it is not structural UNLESS it has grown into the cartilidge and requires surgery. THAT would be a case which would violate rule 22C. However, normal snipping of the tissue is NOT surgical any more than removing dead skin from a wound would be.

Whew! Learning something new every day... Hope this helps some people.

Umbilical hernias are caused when the mother gets sloppy in cutting the cord when the pup is born. It IS NOT hereditary, and is usually preventable by cutting the cord yourself when you have an unexperienced bitch. I surely wouldnt hesitate in breeding an excellent dog because he/she had a naval hernia. JMO. If only people would talk to their vets or at least do a search on hereditary genetics, they will stop yelling "cut'em off, ain't no good for breedin".

I think both problems are hereditary. Thats JMO. Last cherry eye my vet fixed cost 45.00 I have seen people fix them themselves with the same sucess. One of the best dogs I ever had, I raised one litter of pups. I kept 2 of them and one of them developed a cherry eye. I had the vet fix and never had a problem. Could not tell it was ever there. Later I bred him with a female that was his first cousin and six out of nine pups ended up with them. Diden't
make that cross again.

Cherry Eyes

We raise English Bulldogs and Walkers and we see Cherry Eyes in English Bulldogs all the time. They say that cherry eyes are brought on by stress. At our vet he only charges $30 dollars to remove a cherry eye. They can cause dry eye in bulldogs but they have some many other problems anyway so a cherry eye is no big deal. I have only see one cherry eye in a coon hound and that was an adult and one of my friends.

Yes, I know for sure Cherry Eye can be passed on, it is genetic. We breed our Smokey River Cheif male to a friends female. One of the pups had it. Vet charged $65. to fix it. Thought that that was the end. But we were wrong. Breed her. Three pups had it. All are now spade or dead. We have never had any more problems. So, I know, it all came from that out-cross female. Later we found that another of the females from the original litter also has two pups with Cherry Eye. You can follow the trail and see where the genetic problem is. We have no more of that bloodline in our kennels.

Geminite....According to the Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook, 3rd Edition, both cherry eye and umbilical hernias are genetic defects. If you want to argue with James M Griffin,MD and Liisa D Carlson, DVM, be my guest.

Dear Sir,

I doubt that it can be proven to be hereditary in the coon hound but certain breeds do have a hereditary predisposition to get a cherry eye (Bulldog, Cocker Spaniel, etc). It if occurs, it can be surgically repaired. I would just avoid breeding to another dog that has the same condition.

Also at the local vet clinic, there are SIX vets there, all that hold DVMs from four different universities that told me that this is not hereditary.
