How to know when a dog is ready for the hunts?

I handled a couple dogs in some hunts about six years ago. Life happened and went to college, got married, and have two kids now. I bought a pup close to three years ago and worked with him by him self till he got to treeing coon by himself. I got lucky and he was a natural self starter, all I had to do was just get him in the woods. I would consider him 60% accurate when it comes to locating the correct tree. Considering the amount I get to hunt I consider him to be doing alright. He drives a track fast. I've been wanting to get into some hunts late summer but had a couple injuries that kept me from hunting. He is in the best shape hes ever been in. How do you know when hes ready to be put in a hunt?

How to know.

When you have pleasure hunted the dog with a few nite or grand nite champions and it trees coon as quick or quicker than them or if its treed alone with a coon,while they have a circle. Of course you have to know the rules and call the dog accordingly to its hunting ability on any given night. Thats about it, not real complicated, just jump right in, the waters fine and hang on to your hat. And, ah; one for the money, and two for the show, three to get ready; and go cat; Gooooo!

I would try him with some strange dogs and see how he does. If he’s going to hold tree pressure so you can feel confident treeing him in any situation. Absolutely knowing your dog in any situation is a big key to success.

Put him in some hunts if he wins ............ He is ready.

Tarbaby is right. And if the other cast members start laughing at you, he isn't ready. Unfortunately it is hard to tell if they are ready without taking them to a hunt. They have to learn to operate with 3 other dogs running around. If you don't have buddies to hunt with, then you have to enter them in several hunts. They rarely look good in their first couple.

Tar has it right. My uncle has a young female with all the tools. She is fast accurate and gonna go her own way and stay. Thought i was gonna be contending for all kinds of races. She is all out coondog. I won a few cast with her but noticed on others something wasnt right. A couple weeks ago i drew a 3 dog cast with a dog that wins alot. The other 2 left out straight ahead and she veered off left wide open. Immediatly the other 2 turned in behind her tryig to catch up. The dog that wins alot immediatly started opening and down the bottom they went. I watched the garmin as she made a big loop with the other dog barking every breath right back to the truck with the others in tow. I will be the first to say that she should ignore those type things but she dont. Had they not followed she would have been in there alone with a coon but the silly stuff weirds her out. We know her hole so we been working on it but regardless of ability they gotta learn to deal all of it.

I have a young female I take every once in a while, she doesn't do a whole lot. She just kinda tags along, but he doesn't mind her. I think I might just put him in a hunt and see how he does.

Well

I got one that was a cull from another man that got her as a cull. The orignal owner and his partner laughed at me in front of everyone when they found out I had her.Said she was a non hunting slick treeing idiot. Their not laughing anymore, want to get picture taken with her now, Lol. They ask me, quote; How did you get her to do that? 😂 I just ☺, and say; I never did mind about the little things.

It's not how they start it's how they finish! I notice a lot of people don't give some pups enough time. Don't get me wrong, there are some pups that are cull's.

When you have hunted him solo enough that you know what he is going to do before he dose it.

Not to be a smart.... but I'm gonna bet you need to hunt him alone alot more, and you need read the rules alot. Then read them some more. The team has to be prepared.

You cannot prepare for what you don't know ! My female with dogs she knows packs to much. But with strange dogs she just does her own thing. You got to expose them to know what to work on. That hunting them alone is overrated it builds confidence when they are young but when you put them with a pack you find out they have a lack of focus they just looked good by their self because they had no distractions!!


You got to find one that is indifferent that trees coons no matter what they are with. With good dogs or a bunch of village idiots. Jmo

The only way to find out if you have a good dog or the village idiot is to put them in a hunt.

I think you are right Tar. My wife and I took him out last night and with the frost set in early and big moon in the sky. I would consider a hard night for a young dog, he drove a track very confident and treed confident and showed the coon once and a den on the next tree. I feel like it's time to put him under more pressure and see how he does.

Read the rules. Take a stop watch with you when you pleasure hunt. Hunt him with a few strange dogs to get a feeling on how he's going to perform for you. Don't be surprised if he looks like an idiot. But if you properly prepare than you know how he's going to act.

And for the comment about hunting it against nitech and grandnite that dont matter I dont think cause I see lots of registered dogs put woppings on these so call grandnites lol so just take it too the hunts and see !!!
