Hunting license

Does a person need a valid hunting license to participate in a ukc coonhunt? And info is appreciated. Thanks

Posted by johnny reb on 10-14-2017 09:51 PM:

You will need a valid license from your state of residence.

Posted by JiM on 10-14-2017 10:11 PM:

In most states, the scorecard is your license, so no, you do not need a hunting license for a nite hunt event.

Right. That permit # written on scorecard is your license.

Permit

If the club does not get one from the DNR does that mean you would not be covered? Also, if the club is in Wv but you travel to hunt in Pa does the club need to get permits from Pa.

pa has open training no license required

You do need a license from your state of residence. If you live in Tennessee and go to a hunt in Virginia the club will have a permit that will cover you without having to buy an out of state license. If you have no license whatsoever and you get checked you will receive a citation For hunting without a license.

It all depends on state law. Tennessee state law may be different from Virginia state law etc.

X2 it changes from state to state but any that I know of the score card covers you. In Arkansas you wouldn't need a lic. from your state. Actually as long as your not carrying a gun you don't even need the scorecard in Arkansas.

In Tn you better have a license. And if you are from out of state but club has a permit, you still have to have a license from your home state.

Posted by Rip on 10-16-2017 01:15 AM:

I didn't think you had to have a license in Tennessee but I saw two posts above saying you did.

You do NOT. This is taken directly from the TWRA web site. https://www.tn.gov/twra/article/sma...rapping-seasons

"Training of bird dogs and squirrel dogs is permitted year-round on private lands, during daylight hours only. Training of rabbit dogs is permitted year-round on private lands day and night. The chasing of foxes with hounds is permitted year-round, day and night. A hunting license is required while training dogs EXCEPT when a person is competing in recognized field trials. When training on a WMA, a small game permit is required. Refer to specific WMA listings for WMA dog training seasons."

There it is in black and white right on their front page, Nite Hunts are considered field trials. The score card is your license in Tennessee and out of state are not required to have one either.

That was the way it always was but with a couple of people above posting different I thought maybe something had changed but according to the TWRA site it has not.

Rip that statement covers people from out of state. I know of 2 cases thar were ticketed. They did not have a license from there home state. The permits cover people from out of state not having to buy a nonresident license to compete in a field trial. According to Twra even during training season a license is required for residents. I believe Pennsylvania is one of the states that a license is not required during training season. That is the exception not the norm. I received a ticket in Illinois for not having my Tennessee license on me during a hunt.

License

Thanks everyone. Looks like I better get my license.

No that statement covers EVERYONE. It is right there on their front page. It has ALWAYS been that way.

You have to have your license if you are NOT on a hunt, just to run them or be with them, you don't even have to have a dog. If you are with the group you are considered hunting and must have your license even during training season. However that is not the question here. The question is if you are on a nite hunt.

If you are really on a hunt you are covered under Tennessee state law. No way you could lose that one because it is quoted word for word right from their front page. Training season and nite huntes are two different things. I never said you didn't have to have one for training season but by law if you are in a Nite hunt in Tennessee you can NOT be legally cited for not having a license, as Jim said the scorecard is the license for the whole cast.

It doesn't say out of state, it says you do not have to have one period so long as you are in a field trial, never, ever for any reason do you need a license on a recognized field trial, in state, out of state, out of country. No license required in the state of Tennessee.

Every state makes their own laws but that's the Tennessee law.

Yes, in most states whether they require field trial permits for clubs or not still require you to have a valid hunting licence from your own state of residency.
