Wild Grapes

Has anyone else had a bumper crop of wild grapes? I don't know what is going on, but I have seen more wild grapes the last 2 years than I ever have before.

Last night, Rain treed on a large tall tree without any leaves. The tree had a grape vine that went all the way to the top of the tree. The grape vine also had no leaves. The grapes were so thick they looked like basketballs hanging up in the tree top. It took me nearly 10 minutes to find that darn coon, and that darn smart bugger had its face hiding in a huge bundle of grapes.

Seems to be a decent crop of grapes here in PA this year, but not overly abundant. Blackberries and blueberries were crazy heavy this year.

We didn't have anything for a cherry crop though. But I talked to some Foresters from WV and they had cherries by the handfulls everywhere.

You know I had alot of people not far from home ask me if we had any cheries because the did'nt have any, but right here in the stahlstown area "we're about an 1 1/2hr south of you" we had a good chery crop. I think better than average.

The cherry trees had tons of flowers this year, seemed like more than norma, but no fruit. Maybe we just got a late frost of something.

Lots of grapes north and west of you too. I can't believe how many acorns there are?! In fact, every food source seems plentiful except hawethorns. They must have been in blossom during the only major frost because they are non-existent. Weird.

Yep, it is a great year for acorns too. I really believe nothing helps wildlife lay on the fat like acorns. If we have another winter like last year, those critters would be wise to take advantage of all the acorns before they get buried deep.

When y'all say wild grapes are you talking fox grapes or muscadines? Anyhow we had tons of those but they done gone. We now have tons of acorns and the dreaded persimmons. I think the bark of a persimmon tree must smell just like a coon. I tree in several and hardly ever have a coon.

Acorns are hit and miss here. Not a great year for them but not bad. One tree loaded, the next empty. My apple trees were loaded heavy. Actually had branches break from all the weight.

GA Dawg, I don't know what kind of grapes. Wild ones

No persimmon trees here.

All this is a sign that it will probably be a bad winter with all the bumper crops of wild food sources

Nothing better than hunting in wild grapes with a good, locating tree dog. I know some spots I would love to be hunting tonight up there.

I had an old Walker dog that would shine in wild grapes and that's the truth .
