How much do papers matter to you?

I'm just getting into coonhounds and I am getting a blue tick male tomorrow that is not registered. It comes from generations of hunting stock however. It's 4 and a half months old. My question to y'all is how much do papers matter to you? Who has grade dogs out there?

I will help you out here. If you just plan on pleasure hunting and not breeding your dog you will be satisfied with a grade hound. If you have a desire to try the competition hunts or wish to breed your dog if he makes a nice hound papers are a must.

I had a grade dog a while back. Coon treeing son of a gun

Was fast, accurate and always treed alone. You didn't need a leash with him very well behaved dog. With papers he was a 2500 dog easy. I sold him for 500. So yes papers do make a huge difference in the value of your dog.

Papers aren't required to enjoy hunting a nice dog but anything beyond pleasure hunting they are . Also you can single register most if they're worth it but later if you decide to breed for some pups but really don't know the breeding of your dog but only what they look like you could be surprised what the pups look like .

Yeah that's what I was figuring. I am not interested in competition. Just want a coon crazy hound that will get me coons. I am a fur hunter.

i care more about the dog then i do papers,i dont coon hunt to make money anyhow.

for puppies i must see the papers. they make selling the dog a lot easier. they give the puppy credibility. unless you know the breeder and his dogs, the papers are the only objective evidence you have that the dog have potential. now what i said applies mostly to puppies. for an older pup or a dog, you can see for your self how it does in the woods and that is what i'd do.

I cant figure why anyone would waste a year raising and feeding a grade puppy to save a couple hundred bucks, The price of a well bred pup whose parents have been proven to reproduce is nothing compared to the expense of raising and training one to an age where you know if it has potential. Even if the gamble pays off and the grade pup turns into a good dog its value will be small compared to a dog of the same quality with a nice set of papers.

IMO if u r not tryin to sell puppies or hunt in comp hunts papers don't tree coons

Some of the best dogs I've ever been in the woods were registered but just old hunting stock. Best dog I ever had didn't have papers. My next dog probably will not have papers either.

they really don't mean a bunch to me i probly had alot of non registered dogs in my young days had some really good 1s then i started buying reg dogs knowing i was getting a coondog some of the worse i ever had was registered dogs long as a dog can tree a coon and do it right papers don't mean a thing same with a beagle if its a good 1 i don't need papers but i have always been a pleasure hunter just enjoying the nites with a good dog but thats me dang i voted wrong i would own a good non reg dog

I would not get a unregistered dog at this point in time unless I thought I could single register it because I want to be able to comp hunt my dogs. I would if all I planned to do is pleasure hunt in a heart beat, only time papers mean anything is to #1 comp hunt #2 know the breeding behind your dog

I had a nice dog back in the early 90's that came from a man who line bred his own line of walker dogs and never sent the first paper in. he ALWAYS had a super nice dog on the end of his lead strap. His founding stock was bean blossom buck and red eagle dick. after he purchased dogs out of those two he just bred his own stuff. sure wish he was still around, i would for sure own one of his dogs.

papers

Papers don't make the dog, the dog makes the papers. That being said, papers are a great place to start and if you have a hound that turns out to be the next great thing, that's all you've got. I'm a pleasure hunter and all my dogs have been papered, but only because if a dog does turn out to be a good one it's hard to find a nice female or even a male to get said dog bred to. For each is own.

get them is the easy part

If the dog is good and you're happy enough that they'll live & die with you then you don't even need to know what they're out of .
If you change your mind and start thinking about registered hunts you got a problem and if they turn into a once in a lifetime dog that you want to show off to the coon hunting world it happens .

Papers

Many moons ago there was a dog jockey in ST ThomasPa that had a drawer full of reg. papers....said take your pick....I had the same set of papers on 3 Blues
