need help on scared hound

i have a 1 and a half year old walker male. he has never been trained and knows nothing... he will not do anything with a dead coon. but he will sniff and bite just a coon tail. i showed him a live caged coon and he runs from it he wants nothing to do with it he just acts scared of it... how can i train my walker hound to run and tree coon?? how can i get my hound to not be scared of a caged coon?? i have tried everything i can think of... please help me on this????

Have you let the coon go and let the hound watch him run away? A lot of times that will make them give chase if that don't work he would prop ably make a good house dog! Has anything happened previously in his life to make him scared? Don't ever drag him towards it let him do it hisself and build his confidence!maybe just let him run loose for awhile sometimes they will get after cats, groundhogs anything to flip the switch! Good luck sounds like an up hill battle but could just take one thing to flip on!

i have let a coon go he will run it for a sec then goes and runs the other way... he will fight cats only if he is attacked... he has good bloodlines... do ya think by putting the live coon in the live trap by the hounds feed and water pans will get him to get use to the coon cuz im trying that now this is the first day doin that????

Coondog pup

I have started a lot of coondogs. Remember this a pup. All pups grow up and can start at different ages. Frist get a old started coondog and put your pup with him. After this put live coon in a cage and let the older dog start barking at the coon, then turn the pup loose. Your pup is like a child. He know if the coon is his friend or enemy; he just don''t know anything. Man I don't want to be rude, but have be smarter than the pup if you are going to train him. Hope this helps Rex

This is jmo but forget the cage coon a lot of dogs wont mess with a cage coon if your young dog will run a release coon a little ways then you got something to work with don't show him anymore cage coon just keep releaseing some coon for him once he can tree them then put him on some feeder coon tack your time and work with him showing a young dog cage coon can and has been over done to me it hurts more than it helps. If you have a good old broke hound or know someone that does turn him loose with it but try truning some more coon loose for him he should take off good luck with him ps do your release's at night

Don't put the coon around is feed are pen that will make him get use to it and he won't want to kill it! That is how you can break a dog from running junk, opossums, foxes etc... Islet them live with them ,try the old dog and if that doesn't help cull and start over! Maybe rev owner ruined him! Are just take him along on hunts with the old dog and let him do his thing, don't try to force him to do anything! Be smarter than the pup but really he's to old to be called a pup jmo!

put him in a dog box with a small coon that he can kill before you give up on him. I had one the same way till he killed a kitten on the ground. He was all about hunting and killing after that.

Its tough

You make freinds with a dog then thy wont do what you expect of them.I have two pups out of My Ace dog 3 months We are all pretty good buddys I hope they come if not I gues ill have a couple pets

Posted by POTOMAC on 07-31-2011 12:57 AM:

Yeah there is some that don't start until later but tell me honestly how many of you are keeping.,raising, feeding and working a pup from 6 weeks the rite way until its19 months old and it's scared of a coon and you are going to keep messing with it! I foolmwith my pups everyday and I mean everyday in the woods and with drags, shooting water etc.. And if it's still scared of a coon at that age I'm done! Maybe I'm wrong but enough is enough I could understand if he was running and just hadn't started to tree are treeing and not tracking that well but come on desire to track, tree and exterminate coons is in the genetics and if he has no interest in a coon at 19 months old chances are he never will! be honest!

Posted by POTOMAC on 07-31-2011 01:02 AM:

Now the truth with the last post being said and I will say it again 95 percent of the pups on the ground don't get an honest chance! You can't keep them penned up for 15 months and expect them to be a coon dog with a couple nites in the woods,I would have to know the whole background on the pup to say whether it's owner, trainer error area cull cuz frankly I haven't had a cull yet I've had some that were better and faster starting but with today's breeding and the rite amount of time and patience unless there man shy most should do something! Good luckqq

john wick has a nice article in one of his books on this same thing. i do believe it is book 2. he put the coon by the dog's food every day til that darn dog got good and hungry and that dog wasnt scared anymore.
the dog had to confront his fears. you cant do it by force though. sure enough. someone put the fear in him, or he already had it no matter the lines.

the best dog i ever owned was a kemmer cur that i got when she was 18 months old. she had never been to the woods. the first time i took her we crossed a small creek but she stopped dead in her tracks and wouldn't cross. i dragged her back and forth a few times and we went on. after a while she lost her fear of water and learned to enjoy it and went on to become a get gone coon dog. I paid $75.00 for her. now i've got two curs and two plotts and i'm waiting and hoping one will become a dog.

put 2 coons in a silo then turn the dog loose with
them when he corners both up he will be over it
then again neither 1 of them was in a cage tonight.
