Garmin won't go over 200 yards!

My garmin will not track a dog past 200 yards. I did the update on the handheld. I've been cailabrating it. Still nothing. Anybody know any tricks?

Buy a new aftermarket antenna, $10-$20. Check the Vendors classified.

Seriously go buy the Tough Skin antenna for the collar. I had the same issue and this cured mine.

Take the antenna off of your handheld. If it loses signal at 200 yards the connection to where the antenna screws onto the handheld is broken. It will need to be sent back to Garmin. I'm well versed on this, I've already broken 2.

You can send it to me and I will repair the garmin and increase your range for $50.00 . You pay me after you are satisfied when it is returned.

To piggyback off this....my new collar works great. My older collar drops and picks up signal from 150 yds and out....ideas?

Is it losing GPS connection or communication to the handheld?

Probably the anntena on the collar. Mine did this and I replaced it with the Tuff Skin from Bill Tipton and it cured it.

.

There is much more troubleshooting that needs to be done before you buy anything or try anything!

My first question is, do you only have one collar?
I may be able to help you if we do this step by step, and step by step only!

I have ideas of what I think it is, but I need more feedback before I blurt out an answer.

Ken - I'm losing signal to the dog. I figure it is probably the antenna on the collar. Taking it to B&T Days and have it looked at.

Well, certantly sounds like the connector on the Astro 220 has failed. What types of different antennas have you been using and how often are you swapping them out?

Posted by on 04-22-2011 01:40 AM:

.

Intell has you headed in the right direction. The handheld sounds like the problem. If all your collars were working problery and then all of a sudden 200 yards is all you can get, it is unlikely all the antennas on your collars failed at the same time.
If you have a long range antenna or truck antenna hook it up and if 200 yards is what you get then its the connection on the astro.
In most cases it is loose and you can put your finger on it and wiggle it.
I know a good repairman for about $50 and return shipping can fix you up. Of course if you have had it less than a year Garmin will take care of it.
The tuff skins mentioned will only help if the problem is the antenna on the DC 30 which like I said doesn't sound like the problem here.

Well, Mr. Phillips, I certantly appreciate your vote of confidence! It is never my intention to make people mad, or seem argumentative. I just go places sometimes that makes other people uncomfortable or irritable I guess. I enjoy these technical questions because if I can help, I really want to. I do not want people to think I am a know it all because I will be the first to tell you, my knowledge is not nearly as good as some, but what little there is, I try to keep it orderly.
If I can peruse these forums and be a help to someone just occasionally, and it hair lips the devil every day, then I will keep plugging away.
Thanks for the props man, I am glad to know there are others who have a similar mindset. As scary as that may be
