What breed of dog to hunt bobcats?

I am wanting to get started hunting bobcats. I live in NE Arkansas. The terrain is flat with 40 and 80 acre woodlots there is a lot of water that stands in the woods mostly because of beaver ponds. There are lots of cats! Any Ideas? And where I can find some dogs?

I live in northeast Ar also. I coonhunt blueticks, and manage to tree a few cats every year with them, unintentioinally most of the time. i dont really get into cat hunting, they usually go farther before they tree, but I have intentionally ran a few. Right off the top of my head, I dont know where you could find a cat dog, I will check around, I have a buddy out in utah that cat hunts, he might be making a trip this fall??

Most of the guys that I know and hunt with that run bobcats exclusively are hunting running walker type dogs. Many are crossed with bluetick to give them a little more nose, tough and tree.
If you are genuinely interested in purchasing good, broke dogs be ready to part with a lot of cash. Most of these dogs (grade) will bring $2,500 and up.
I know where a solid broke seven year old is. He is a good hound but will not tree. I might suggest that you put a couple of young dogs with him to get them started. Hopefully, the youngsters would tree and tell you where the cat was.

I am looking for a good broke dog. I would be willing to spend the money to buy one or more. It sounds like good ones are very hard to come by and the don't come up for sale very often.

LEOPARD CUR [ HOUND ]

A lot of people in these Virginia mt. [ blue ridge ] use leopards on bobcats. Cold nosed, tough, gritty, open mouthed [most are ], hard tree dogs, and they handle like a dream [ they dont have to leave the country to tree a cat ,coon, or bear ]. These dogs have been used for years[ in certain parts of the country, deep south and southern blue ridge mts.] for all of these critters. They are also extremely smart [ at times almost humanlike ]and they hunt to please their owner not themselfs, [ much like a birddog does] they also hunt out to about 100 yards [ or less ] but there are exceptions to that rule. Anyway people like what they like, that is just the way it is. There are 2 people that I know of that have these type of dogs, and from time to time they have pups for sale. They are Brandon Thompson and John Myles from West Virginia. If you are interested write back and I can get you their numbers. I think you will be more than pleased. GOD BLESS YALL ALL.

Spent last winter fooling around on the bobcats, I dont think the breed matters as long as it is a good, cold nosed track dog and a decent tree dog that will stay till you get there.

You are totally right about breeds do not matter, it is the qualities of the dog that matter. My bobcat dogs have to have better than medium nose and brains to match. The dog should come from lines that can catch those cats. Once in a while you get lucky using coondog stock but you have a better chance using those lines.

Alot of the boys around here,Va and N.c are hunting walker hounds.They hunt grey fox in the summer months and during the winter they hunt cats.These dogs will catch and tree.Are broke to handle.

there is a line of plotts in the southwest that make good cat dogs.

Cameron bred blueticks are bred to make good cat dogs, cold nose, grit, and treeing ability seems to be pretty common in this line.

Get somethign from dryground stock... it will greatly benefit you

are you kidding twd? catdogs here in maine are lucky to get 100 bobcats before they die here in maine . im disapointed if i dont tree 100 coons a season with young dogs.i can take those same young dogs doing good on coons and go day after day without a cat. i would love to do the kind of cat hunting your talking about.

It does make a huge difference if you are hunting bobcats where the trees are 200 feet high vs. CRP grasslands in Kansas where the only thing to climb is a fence post, but my experience is that an average catdog will make an outstanding coondog. Top cat dogs that tree multiple cats everyday are better trackdogs and better locators. They make very few mistakes and are smart. This is only my opinion.

We hunt dry ground down here as it rarely if ever snows. I can tell you from years of experience of hunting this country that just because a hound is a world class coon hound does not mean that he can tree a bobcat. It takes a different style of hound than the competition coon dog.
The guys I know that are catching 150-200 bobcats a year are running primarily running walker type dogs, some crossed with bluetick.

Right you are Partner. In this dry country, a dog has to be able to drag his nose when cold trailing but as the kitty begins to stink, needs to pick his head up and run like a fox hound. It is difficult to find a dog that can do both well enough to catch bobcats on a consistent basis.
The guys down in South Texas that catch the big numbers typically hunt running walkers. They have enough cats down there that they don't have to do much trailing. As a rule, they will have an average of 10 hounds on the ground.
