Minn Clubs

NOTICED THAT HEWITT , BIGELOW , AND SPRING VALLEY ALL HAVE HUNTS ON THE SAME WEEKEND IN APRIL. I THINK THE WEEKEND OF THE 24TH. WONDERING WHY THAT HAPPENED , EXSPECIALLY BIGELOW AND SPRING VALLEY AS THEY ARE NOT ALONG WAY APART.. DOESN'T THAT AFFECT YOUR ENTRIES? OR DON'T THOSE CLUBS SUPPORT EACH OTHER MUCH?? WONDERING??
... WE( north dakota club ) HAVE TO WATCH THAT CLOSE TO MAKE SURE WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING THE SAME WEEKEND AS ANYBODY ELSE SO WE CAN HAVE A CHANCE AT DRAWING OUTSIDE HUNTERS.

jay it's been like this for years, talk about the northwoods club to start back up, working on didicated members, enough guides to cover 6 registered casts and at least 3 nt.ch. cast, will start out holding hunt test at first to build the club back up to were we need to be to hold nite hunts once again.

In the past it has never been an issue or conflict between Spring Valley and Bigelow due to the distance between clubs and no clubs between us.Most of the entries at Bigelow come from n.w.Iowa and s.e .S.D. other than the locals we don't get many entries from too far away in Minnesota.Yes we get an occasional visit from some folks throughout the state but it is rare.Last year we averaged 15-18 entries per event 4 U.K.C. and 1 N.K.C./W.T.D.A. which drew over 30 dogs.In my opinion its the present economy keeping folks closer to home ,as well as there is less people involved in competition hunting than in the past. We don't have to sugar coat it, there are a lot more computer coonhunters than actual hunters nowdays! Hunting is also a fad just like horse back riding etc. plus according to the DNR stats hunter numbers drop about 7% per year, youth numbers are way down.

Posted by thickcoon on 03-21-2010 02:09 PM:

it doesnt help that alot of guys from the clubs down in southern mn hold there hunts, and thats it. you will never see most of them at any other event in the state. and then some of them even have the nerve to bitch and moan when they dont get a huge number of people supporting their events.

EXACTLY!! And add the fact that some people think there clubs hunts are the only ones that matter. There are MANY fri and sat nights threw the summer without ANY hunts and there are many weekends threw the summer where there are 3 hunts the same night! Kinda stupid if you ask me since theres only 6 active clubs in the state of MN!

You dont sopose you get more SD and IA entries cause theres 3 hunts in MN the same night and your on the iowa border? I aint seen to many people drive past 1 hunt to go to another!

In this economy if i have to deciede between goin 5o and 100 miles where do you sopose im gonna go? But if my only option is to go 100 miles than im most likely gonna go!

Im not picking at you or anybody or your club or any club! I just had to get this off my chest as a person that enjoys the hunts and goin to the hunts at any location! But finacially I would be a retard to drive an extra 50 miles if i dont have to!

Jesse,

I think what you're trying to say is, you'd like to attend hunts in Worthington but there are always other options closer to home the same weekend and you'd foolish to drive further than you have to.

With all your exclamation points! It really reads like you are mad! at something! LOL!

I'm sending you a PM too.

HEY BUDDY MOST OF US SOUTHERN HUNTERS ARE NOT GOING TO DRIVE ALL OVER THE FLIPPIN STATE TO GET A YELLOW SLIP THE ECONOMY IS POOR EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT WE SUPPORT ARE LOCAL CLUBS TO THE BEST OF ARE ABILITY WHY DRIVE ALL OVER THE STATE TO THESE POORBOY EVENTS? I WOULD BE SUPPRIZED IF ANYBODY MORE RUNS THE 10000 LAKES EVENT THIS YEAR EVEN FOR THE ADDED BONUS THEY APPLIED IT JUST DONT COVER THE COST PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!! THE ONLY EVENTS WORTH PURSUING ANYMORE ARE THE MAJOR EVENTS AND THAT IS STILL A LOSEING PROPOSITION UNLESS YOU WIN IT ALL!!! TILL THEN I WILL SUPPORT MY (SOUTHERN) LOCAL CLUBS. HAVE A NICE DAY.

so in other words you only support clubs within a certain range of your front door? my point was us northern boys make efforts to go to the events in the southern part of the state, but you rarely see it the other way around. my comment was refering towards a certain individual at a certain event last year that sat in his club house and i listened to him bitch about nobody in the northern part of the start showing any participation at his club, when the night before i was at an event up in brooten (i believe it was) and didnt see his face anywhere? nor have i ever seen him at an event anywhere up here!!! doesnt seem fair for that guy to be able to bitch at us "northern boys" now does it? also if it narros it down at all im not talking about anybody from the plainview or wanamingo club!

Posted by Walker Girl19 on 04-04-2010 11:33 PM:

I've always said and I could be wrong but if you have the dog you feel can win you will attend events all over no matter what the prize or economy. The reason I say this is because I have been there done that! It is all about the HORSEPOWER you are packin. I have drove all over the state chasing the 10k, drove to RQE's in the upper midwest. But I can also say I have never been north of the Autumn Rush club, probrably because Iowa is closer. I hope that I get the dog again someday that I can hunt extreme northern Minnesota and compete but in my opinion that is a special dog to track up there, I have owned and finished great hounds but it is just wrong up there!

lol once you have a house payment ,truck payment and all the bills that go with that please dont talk to us about the economy, it is hard out there right now!!!! and no david im not talking to you lol

In this day and age, folks have options. There are several clubs and registries to choose from. In today's economy, guys are going to choose where they get the most "bang for they're buck". What that is, is up to each hunter. Some like money, some like prestige, some just good hunting terrain, some just a club known for good fellowship.
I'm not afraid to travel to a hunt. A week ago, in less than 10 days I hunted 3 states and entered 5 nite hunts.
I'm going to pick events that make sense to me, whether distance, terrain, entry fee, or whatever.
When I hunted up north in Brooten I had excellent hunting. If it wasn't for the distance, I'd go back more often.
The extreme northern clubs I know hunting can be difficult. Pine forests, swamps, porcupines, & etc. If I have a choice to go north, or go the same distance to Iowa, Wis, or NW IL, I know what I'd do.
Sometimes staying home and hunting is the best option too, and nowadays that is getting to be the best option for many of us.
I'm thankful when a southern club draws northern entries, but I sure don't expect them regularly nor would I expect them to expect us up there. Down here in SE MN, just like out of state entries, you don't expect them but are thankful when you can get them.

Id love to make everyones hunts!! Seems i only make it to the Extreem northern hunts.. like Fosston (1 hr away), Hewitt (2 hours away) and Brooten (3.50 hours away)~ I think its pretty fair to say that the economy has everyone watchin their pennys closer.. Would be nice if Gas went back down to a reasonable price!! Id love to come hunt coon down south sometime... I hear there are a lot more coon down there!!

Anybody think of the Tri State

Northern boys please remeber that the Bigelow Club is working in cooperation with the Canton SD. club and the Primghar IA club. Yes there are several weekends threw the summer were there are no hunts in Minnesota but these weekends could interfer with other clubs that are members of the Tri State Coonhunters Association. I know for a fact that there are several members, including myself, that frequently patronize all three clubs in the Tri State. I never have based my nite hunt participation on state loyalty. I simply travel to the hunts that are closest to me. I will patronize the closest club to me on any given weekend regardless of the host club.

This is not a north south thing in any way!

jesse it pains me to say it but you are correct. this has always been a problem around here. i am sure it happens in other states but probably isnt as big of a deal because there are more hunters. 1 hunt that comes to mind was for several yrs hewitts walker sec was the same weekend as elmwoods rqe.

btw i think its a great thing you guys are doing with the 10000 lakes but you need to advertise it, if that isnt already being done.
