I dont know how to explain it i guess it comes with experience.an from my experience most of these so called cold nosed dogs just make tracks look cold cause they dont know what there doin.when a dog runs for 45 mins an trees a den he aint cold nosed ,he cant run a track.now if he runs a track for 45 mins an puts a coon on the outside he's prolly a decent cold nosed dog.thats just my experience.

Hunt him in the months of December and January during the week of the full moon, when the temperature is below 25 degrees, and only hunt between the hours of 11:00 P.M. and 3:00 A.M. and if he can show you a coon on the outside on 50% or more of the tracks he/she hits, then they are probably pretty cold nosed!!!

A coldnosed dog (IMO) is a dog that can take a track and move it (not boohooing around but actually MOVE it and do it well) that other dogs don't even know is there.. You end up with a pair of eyeballs looking down at you..

Lots of people seem to confuse a dog that can't move a track with a cold nosed dog.. A true coldnosed dog will move that track.. A dog that doesn't know what it is doing just makes a lot of noise and doesn't really go anywhere..

Lots of dogs are tight mouthed on a cold track and open more as the track heats up.. At least in my experience which is mostly cat hunting..

you are rite.i like the kind of dog you can count on to take that track and get it gone while the others is trying to figer out where it went the good cold nose dog will have the meat and move the track like its tyed to it ,but that kind dont come along every day and i am sure you know that.i dont have cat dogs but if you ever come to ky to hunt bob cat please let me know i will even put you up so i can hunt with some cat dogs onley way we tree them is by accident i got one on my wall that a buddeys dog treed last winter while mine had a coon close treed .i have put my dogs out on cat with a coler on and they just wount run them.

A dog that consistantly trees coon other dogs can not smell probably has a decent nose. Most of today's hounds do not have any better nose than my Mt Curs. I do breed some hound to have a nose on them. You don't get that by breeding "All Grand" pedigrees, most competition bred dogs are hot nosed.

Top cold nosed hounds are scarce as hen's teeth.

Some hounds do have better noses for a bad track and will work them silently til the track warms up enough to open and have the meat. I have watched them do it. You have some that are track straddlers and do a lot of mouthing while that quiet one does his work ahead of them.

Bluedogman is Right!!!Some dogs are better cold trailers then others. My old female would'nt open as much as the other dogs did,So therefore she would start to line it out the right way and then she would open more on it..and o'll hell would break loose..BOOOOOOOOO..She figured it out, then they would catch up to her as she lined it out and treed with the coon.Bluedogman...take it you got Blueticks???lol..
