are coons bad on the turkey population?
ive heard different things so im just wonderin
Coon and opossum both will clean out a nest. I've seen a hen raising h#ll at a coon that was eating her eggs and the coon just ignored her til she pecked him then it turned on her then go back to the eggs.

Coon is the number predator for turkeys eggs..
they ain't hurt our turkey population none!
they need to open turkey season up like they do rabbit season here. if they dont we are gonna be covered up with them in a few years. our turkey population has exploded in the last few years.

There are alot of animals,
that will eat eggs. Coyotes, Skunk, Mink, Weasels, Opossums, Raccoons, snakes, even dogs will eat eggs. But most of the time a coon will get the blame for raiding a nest with eggs in it. Sometimes you can tell what kind of animal raided the nest by the way the eggs were eaten & how the nest was torn up.
There is an old saying "I sure broke him/her/it, from SUCKING EGGS" came from these animals raiding hen houses, killing chickens &/or eating the eggs. They would inject a red pepper solution or some other kinds of stuff into some of the eggs, & hope that it would break whatever was eating the eggs from doing it again. Also, almost all of the farmers in our area that had a hen house, would put GLASS EGGS in the hens nest. This served 2 purposes, one was to get the hens to lay their eggs in the nests in the hen house & the other reason was for snakes. When a snake eats an egg, it swallows the egg whole. When a snake would eat a GLASS EGG, it could not pass the egg through it's system & would die.

Coons not only prey on turkey eggs, but when the poults get big enough to fly up and roost, coons can climb up and catch them then as well.
In the coons defence they have to eat the eggs because the turkeys eat everything else. The turkeys clean our woods like vacums. They need 2 weeks of hen days here to controll population. So if a coon robs a nest No Big Deal here in NC.

I have always been told they were hard on turkey eggs.

Turkey eat more acorns than anything else so why don't they open season more moderatley on them? And it sure wouldn't hurt if they made more moderate deer harvests too. the fact is if the DNR sold tags or special liscenses to coon hunt they would like coon a lot more. The same as deer or turkey. but then of course the poor game wardens would have to get out at night & harass the coonhunters & would have to actually earn their salaries. We have the soriest one I've ever seen. he rides up & down our new trophy status bass lake all day & you never see him at night. 90% of the hunters carry their rifle year round & never get caught & you can tell it too by how hard it is to tree them here most times as this country is absolutley dogged to death. I may get caught but I sure wish we had a good one here .

Warden actually said they're trying to get the DNR to open season here year round to thin coon down because of the deer & turkey & I think this is pitiful, but they sure don't care to fine you if you do get caught. 50 mile from here there are a lot of coon & they will throw the book at you if caught there.
