Can anyone tell me if and how I can ship a rifle to someone if they want to buy one? I have a gun on here for sale and have had several people who have wnated to buy it, but I am not sure if I can ship a firearm through the mail system??? If anyone can tell me if I can and how, I would really appreciate it!!

Thanks in advance for all responses

Do you have to ship it to a dealer or a Federal License holder?

I've had people tell me that if I ship myself, that it would be confiscated by the postal service if they x-rayed the contents. I've also been told not to let a dealer ship as well...I'm confused...Any more info out there..I don't want to loose my gun to the postal service???

Easiest way

I ship quite a few guns a year and the easiest no hassle way to do it is take it to your local FFL and let them ship it for you. The guy I use charges twenty bucks.

have been a dealer for many yrs..., best way is to ship ffl to ffl, could ship to ffl holder.... most carriers are very aware of firearms and follow the law or exceed it to be safe.... good luck, would help you out if closer....

Here in NH, you can shop a firearm anywhere in the US to a person or place, without needing someone with an FFL in between. Just pack it up and fed ex it out. Dont place ammo in the box, and if possible take the bolt out, etc. Shipping a firearm isn't illegal.

federal regulations require that a modern gun be shipped to an ffl holder, shipping for repair purposes are a bit different, but for all practical purposes gun shipments are ffl to ffl these days...

Thank you Mr. Webb and everyone else for giving me an idea of how to properly ship this!!!

(B8) May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier? [Back]

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

You do not have to have a ffl to ship a firearm just to one!!!

Posted by rrs on 12-06-2008 07:06 PM:

true, can ship with no ffl, but cannot be the receiver....

Posted by mjflores on 12-06-2008 10:04 PM:

It's easy...first ya git yourself a box that can hold said smokepole or peacemaker.

Next ya dump yourself in some styrofoam peanuts.

No ya stuff old boomstick in the box and tape er shut.

No ya stick a label on the box, with your name and address and where it should end up.

Optional: Take a black magic marker and write "fragile" on the box (as if that really makes a difference).

Now, take er down to your local UPS or Fedex, and explain to the nice lady...or fat guy in the brown shirt and pants that you'd like to ship a box. They'll charge you the appropriate amount. Feel free to make small talk about how deer season has gone while they tally up the total. Pay said employee, and leave right after saying "good day to you sir and or madam, tally ho!".

Now go home and giggle all the way jest cuz ya shipped a firearm.

Re:Shipping

Ok, for all to know since it seems everyone has a different way to ship a firearm? All were good advice, except the one that says to try and fool the UPS agent...That's just a good way to have your firearm gone for sure and probably be looked at very seriously by some law enforcement offical. So here is the scoop, I just got off the phone with UPS as per their rules about shipping a firearm is: Anyone can ship a firearm using UPS but must state that it is a firearm, not have it loaded(duh) not have any ammo in the same container and can only be shipped if shipping from a private individual to a FFL dealer or holder. It must be dropped off at an offical UPS outlet, no pick-up by UPS and must have an adult signature verification on the parcel. This is the official way UPS said it could be shipped by an individual...Hope this straightens everyone out that was unsure....

Posted by rrs on 12-07-2008 03:01 PM:

correct information has been posted, an individual can ship to an ffl holder, not to another individual at least legally, the individual can pass-not receive... federal atf regulations apply to all gun shipments of modern firearms...

Posted by baby_gaboo on 12-07-2008 03:36 PM:

keep in mind that if the gun that you are selling is a registered gun you will want to be shipping it to and going through an FFL dealer in order for them to transfer that gun out of your name...
