The "One more drop" curse

Its been a while since I posted much on here but I still get on every day for the good reading. About a year or two ago I had a thread about my bad luck with getting greedy after a good nights worth of hunting by instead of calling it a night after multiple successful drops to deciding to get "just one more drop" in. I even said at the time that even though I knew better that it would take more than an extra long night chasing dogs for me to learn. Well Sunday night could have been my learning experience. The first drop was a very long running coon that ended about 4 hollows over from where I turned loose at. Both dogs worked great and I couldnt have asked for them to operate any better. I left the house around 10pm and was looking at the coon by around 10:45. Left from there and on the way back to the house I decided to turn my young dog out by herself off in a hollow that had been cut a few years ago but before it was cut was an absolute honey hole. She headed down by the pond, struck a super hot track, squalling on track like I never heard from her before and the race was over in less than a hundred yards with her hammering away seemingly never taking a breath between barks. Two very successful hunts, with the second making me very proud of my little gyp which I very seldom hunt solo. It is now about 11:05 and I am loading her up and heading home for the night. Coming up to the bridge I decided that I have treed countless coons on the creek right below the house and since the dogs seemed to be clicking tonight and the drive home would take all of 3 minutes frome the creek I just had to have "one more drop". I pulled up on the edge of the bridge, stepped out of the truck aiming to turn them loose under the guard rail when I got pulled to the ground. Trying to ball up and defend myself I realized there was not much of a chance of that happening since it was my own dang truck that was giving me my whooping. It had jumped out of gear and I would say that this was the 1 in a 500 chance I didnt pull the emergency brake. The door knocked me down and when I cleared the door is when I realized it was my truck moving so I tried to kick myself clear and got my right leg hung between the back side of front tire and the fender. I rolled over with the truck to try and avoid getting my leg snapped and got loose only to have it catch me by my ankle and roll all the way up the inside part of my lef and come off at the hip. I was able to stand, get to my truck and drive home. My 3 minute drive now took much longer since I couldnt move my leg very well and first gear was all I could do. I couldnt stop my legs from shaking or anything else for that matter long enough to change gears. After 2hrs and several x-rays at the ER I have been blessed to not have any broken bones or dislocations of any kind. I am however being sent tomorrow to get a MRI on my knee. They tell me it is very likely I will have a torn ACL or MCL but until then I am confined to an immobilizing leg brace which I consider small taters compared to what could have happened. So now I will officially say it and you can mark it down, "From this day forward, I will not surrender to the temptation of "just one more drop" after a successful nights worth of hunting."......maybe...I think....

Many stories could be told about one more drop but yours could have been worse. Me and the little woman had something happen like that one night. I let her drive. We pulled up and instead of her putting it in park she stopped and put it in reverse. We got out and the pickup started backing up knocking her down. The open door knocked her down, she rolled out of the way with the truck tire only breaking her foot while I'm chasing the truck across a field luckily catching it. Once again could have been worse.

Dont ya just love them one more drops. lol. They seem to find away to get me every time. But I still havent learned yet. lol AW just one more. lol

Not only can the "one more drop" crowd get on you, but the "never hunt alone" crowd can, as well.

Really sorry to hear of your accident, but I have bad news. In fact it is really bad news. Even though you had this horrific accident and by the grace of God you are pretty lucky ... sir, you will not learn from this!!!!!!!!!

You suffer from a terrible sickness that inflicts most of us here. It is bad enough that coon hunting consumes us, but it also greatly reduces our capacity for common sense.

You sir will again fall to the terrible "one last drop" again and again.

By the way, in these parts that there is known as Larry Luck.lol

Larry I am afraid you are correct. Fact of the matter is if I had level timber to cut them loose on I would have gone last night but since everything round here is hills and hollows I just didnt see it happening. The fact that we finally got a much needed rain last night also helped curb the need to get out not to mention the wife has confiscated my keys just to make sure, lol. Hopefully this afternoon the dr will tell me no ligament damage and brace can come off in a couple more days and I can get back in action. Really stinks though that right now I cant even lift a bucket of dogfeed to carry out to the dogs but I could definately get used to the wife and son waiting on me hand and foot. Well, in all reality, I cant stand anyone do anything for me, Im used to fending for my self but it is great to know that I am blessed with a loving family who wants to take care of me. I tell you though, in 2 days I have been on the shelf I have figured out that there is absolutely nothing on tv during the day so between my yokie keeping me entertained and what reading I have access to here on the internet I can at least manage the passing of the day, and I really never knew how much I like a midday nap, too.

I'm afraid they are right i am pretty sure that all hunters suffer from the one more drop disease lol I know my husband does after he would tell me wait up one more drop and i'll be home he will either lose the dog. Or after 12 one last drops and 6 am rolls around he will finally fall in the door. Some crazy things like what happen to you have also happen to him and yet the one last drop disease still hasn't went away so I'm sorry to say sir but there is no cure for the "ONE LAST DROP DISEASE" but don't tell your wife that she may never let you go again lol!

Sounds like it's time for "Hover Round" to the rescue. Maybe you could just rent one since you won't need it very long. I'd get one with gumbo mudders. I'm sure it would be in great shape after you whipped it up and down the mountains and through a few creeks. Hope you get good news today and heal quickly! I'd cull that thing (truck) if I were you.

When I was a little boy my dad had gotten the tractor stuck while bushhogging. He went and borrowed my uncle's truck with a winch to pull it out. After hooking the winch cable up he got back in the truck to find me with both hands on the ear shift giving it the business. He told me"Son you ont need to do that, it could come out of gear." He then proceeds to knock it out of gear to show me the results... We rolled down the hill rather uneventfully, when we got to the bottom he said "see what happened." and I replied "Yeah, Nothing." now you know what my dad had to deal with me growing up.

My old dogs used to ride around with me in the front of the truck, jed was a little prone to gettin excited and jumpin around wantin out. I was out opening the gate one day and I heard a funny soundin kachunk behind me, here jed got sick o waitin on me and jammed the truck a standard no less in gear and done took off. Now I did not want to walk home and figured he might not come back after me so I had to run him down, if'n one of the other dogs was with him to work the gas pedal I woulda been walkin home for sure. He did'nt have any gas money anyhow so i would have caught him eventually.

happened to me tonight.... It was a bright moonlit night so I got my dog and headed to the woods. First drop she made two loops through the timber and never opened so i caught her and moved to the next spot. She made two loops and never opened so i thought to myself ... the coons must not be down, and with her being yhoung I better catch her and go home before she gets nored and runs something she does not need to.... SO I start calling and looking for her. After almmost getting stuck and having to go out a different gate, which was locked and I did not have the key to so I had to get the wrenches out and take it off the hinges and put it back on by myself, an hour and a half later I found her and went home.

And I sit her typing she is in the pen blowing the top out of the tree next to her.... gotta love a young dog!

Well I get back to the dr on Wed for him to tell me what the MRI reveals. On the first visit he said without a doubt that my MCL is torn and is holding me out of work for what he says at best would be 6-8 weeks but not be surprised if its after the first of the year before he gives me a release. I have a copy of the MRI report but to a stupid guy like me its all jibberish. Only thing I can make out for certain is the MCL being shot and the ACL not being torn. Lots of other abbreviations I dont know and all taking up 2 pages in the report. So now just when my little gyp was really starting to click and it all come together I possibly cant hunt for the rest of the '08 year. I have to stay in the immobilizer for a minimum of 3 weeks and after that I go to a hinged brace and most likely physical therapy, so I very optimistic about getting back out in less than 2 months but at the same time I dont have my hopes up either. Dr said he has had top level athletes ( which I am not) come back as early as 4 weeks and take as long as 12 weeks (which is why my hopes arent up), it all depends on the healing rate, activity, and to not re-injure it while rehabbing. At any rate it could have been much much worse so very thankful I am.

Sorry to hear

of your misfortunes you are really lucky to be alive. We all have given into that one last drop when deep down we know better. Could have been home at a decent hour only to have the dang hounds get gone for hours. Oh well we try and learn by it but as Larry said we really don't . Hope you get to feeling better.

Well, went to Dr yesterday and got a bit of good news. For a full blown MCL tear he said I was already showing tremendous signs of healing. No other ligament damage but along with the mcl is a mild knee sprain. He also said that I have a servere ankle sprain and that if all the pain werent "centralized" on my knee there is no way I would be walking on my foot. He actually said that where it appeared that my lower leg took the full brunt of the force and the amount of weight that actually mashed my leg that unless I kept my leg elevated to keep the fluids from going down then my ankle was going to be swelled for a while and possibly the whole length of time it takes for my knee to heel. Anyways back to the good, on first visit he could actuall take my lower leg and move it sideways to about the 2 oclock position with my upper leg completely straight. Yesterday he could barely move it to one side at all and said it was amazing at how quickly the mcl was scarring itself to heal. With that he has went ahead of the 3 week schedule and given me the hinged brace to start wearing after only 10 days. (Whats that smell) Granted I am not supposed to wear the hinged brace all the time and still have to wear the immobilizer at night or whenever pain takes over in my knee it is still great not to be it it as often. He has given me some mobility exercises to do at home. Dont get me wrong they hurt like heck and exactly like the doc says I will not overdo it, when it hurts I quit. Also walk around as much as possible but at first signs of pain I have to sit or retutrn to the immobilizer. What about the ankle, well he says that as long as I can bear the pain to keep moving cause Ive had sprained ankles before and outside a wrap there really isnt much to do for it other than grit my teeth and take it. He says the 6-8 weeks is still a very real possibility but with my current progress after only 10 days "you never know". (Can ya'll smell that?) I actually feel tons better, dont get me wrong I still hurt like the dickens but considering what I felt like a week ago, I feel great!! I even got to go out last night and somewhat tend to the dogs. Granted it took me multiple trips to the golf cart carrying small amounts of water in small buckets but the way them ol hounds was a carrying on it was worth it. The wife has been great in feeding them and shoveling out their kennel, which to my surprise she hasnt complained one bit but they were for ever more going apecrap at my first appearance to the kennel in more than a week. Missy had to actually hold them by the collar to keep them from jumping up all over me and they were more than a hand full for her to say the least. (Ya'll sure you cant smell that?) I am very optimistic about my recovery time now but for once will take the dr word and try and not do anything I shouldnt for fear of re-injury and just grind it out but I gotta say I am REALLY liking what Im smelling...if I can just put a finger on it. Its been a while since I got a whiff..wait a minute... I GOT IT!!! ITS THE SMELL OF "ONE MORE DROP" BABY!!!!

Last night things were not going as good as they should of been and we decided to make ONE MORE DROP. Being experienced hunters, LOL, as soon as I said lets make one more drop the coversation changed to lets make two more drops. That way we won't curse the next one. Anyway we made one drop changed our minds about making two and went home.
