Coons, dogs, and rabies

The other night a good friend and I were coonhunting and experienced a "Freak" accident. They caught the coon on the ground, and in the scramble my friend got bit by one of the dogs.
There were three dogs involved, and two of them were mine. Since the dog had bit my friend we turned the coon in to have it checked for rabies. There is almost an epidimic of rabies in this area, and there was some reason for concern.

Turned out the coon just had a bad day and the story had a good ending. Had the coon been positive it would have been bad.....real bad. It was time for my dogs to get their booster shots but because of my schedule, and a tradgey that occured in our family I put it off. It was my fault. I procrastinated.

I just wanted to encourage all of you make sure your dogs are caught up on their shots. It can save you a lot of time, money, and trouble.....even your dogs life or your life.

Once the symptoms of rabies begin to show up it is too late.
Animal control, and law makers and enforcment have done a good job because there has not been a reported death of humans since the late "40's"(because of rabies) according to the information I have.
It only takes a few minuites and a few dollars. I have been sweating bullets because of this; concerned for my friend and our hounds.

This has made me realize (after almost 40 yrs. of hunting) that a good hunt can go bad real fast, and I don't want my friends, or me to become a satistic.

Get the lead out and " Git-R-Done." Get your hounds vaccinated.

Craig

Four or five years ago there was a animal rights activist on a walk that saw a friendly coon along a walking trail. Thought he would pet the coon and got bit. He ended up dieing. At least that's what I heard on the news. Running traps as a kid I got bit. Of course I didn't say anything to mom. Got lucky But right. Always keep dogs up to date.

As the old saying goes, " Been there-Done That." Got bit by a coon and had the shots. It's been about 6 yrs. ago. I need to check my tolerance to rabies and get a booster. I have hunted for a long time but this was the first time had an experence like this.

If my dogs had been current on their shots it would not have been a big deal....just get their booster and go on. The likely-hood of my friend getting the disease under those conditions were small, but when it's your life you don't take chances.

Everyone takes for granted that nothing will go wrong......but sometimes that is not the case. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. My dogs are caught up, and will be. Keep up with the records too. Put them in a safe place so you can find them when you need them.

Craig, there are deaths from rabies every year, but most of them come from bats! I've had the shots!!! Everyone says that the first shots(immune-globbulin)sp? Hurt real bad. They did'nt bother me at all. But my cousin had to get them at the same time and he almost passed out!!! Said it felt like fire!!! The biggest problem was the cost$$$$$ My total bill was almost $12000 I had to pay $2800 out of my pocket!!!!!! They got you because they know if you don't get the shots you're going to "go on and see about it" Rabies ai'nt no joke it will make a ghost out of you quick!!!!

Thanks for the information. Didn't know there had been a rabies related death that recent. It is real, and should be taken seriously.

There are shots that Animal Control officers, Wildlife Officers, and I believe Vets must take to protect themselves from rabies. I underwent the series of shots a few years ago, but need to be tested for my tolerance level now. There is a word for it, but I don't remember it.

The accident that we experienced made me realize how quick things can happen. I'm glad this story had a good ending.

Dave got bit by a coon 2 yrs ago. We had the coon tested and it was negative. But he still got vaccinated for rabies, just incase he gets bit again. He had to go back 3 times. The shots didn't cost that much. I think all together, not over $100. that included a tetanous shot.

Just went to a rabies clinic today and had 4 of the dogs done. Cost was only $5. each
Now 10 more to go. LOL

Need to come there for shots. Here, if you get bit by an animal and take the shots, they are about 3 grand.

The shots that Dave took were only a vaccine. The one that you have to get for a rabid animal bite are in the thousands price.

A fellow coonhunter here in Florida bought a dog from the Winter Classic a few years ago. It later was acting sick, took it to the vet and it turned up positive for rabies. The guy's 2 kids, wife, and himself all had to get treated. He said it was way up in the thousands.

Symptoms can show up anwhere from 10-35 days.
The Dr. said you had seven days to get the shots started once infected with the rabies virus. If you wait until you are aware of the symptoms, it is too late.

When I started this thread, the intention was not to scare anybody, but to encourage everyone to make sure their dogs are caught up on their rabies vaccinations. As dogs change hands sometimes we are unaware of their shot record, or do not have access to their records. If we are going to hunt and persue raccoons, we just need to be cautious, and having our dogs currently vaccinated is one way we can. An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

Craig,
I totally agree. If my friend's purchase at Winter Classic would have been vaccinated, a whole lot of heartache would have been avoided.

Our old male got attacked by coyotes right after we got him. He hadn't been vaccinated for rabies in quite some time. So we worried about the possibity of rabies. If he was up to date at the time, then we wouldn't had worried about it.

If anything, just for the dogs protection and everyone involved, you can order a 10 does vial of the rabies vaccine and give it yourself. Cost is only about $10., about $1.00 per dog.
It's not recognized by our state, but at least they have been vaccinated.

I just want to be prepared from now on in case my dog should get " adder one." That's mountain talk for " after."

Not many. You just have to know when and where to turn your dogs out. That's not always fool proof. A friend of our's lost a nice plott female this year to a gator.
