I read where someone has a line that is only producing 2 and 3 pup litters out of different males over 3 generations.

I have seen 2 and 3 pup litters but then the same female will produce a 6-10 pup litter next time around.

My question: Is there something in their line that is causing it OR is their timing off??

Just an opinion here…what I have seen and it was years ago…I bred a pretty good line of Mt Curs out of big game and coon dogs and used them as hog dogs…I line bred and inbred these dogs quite a bit for 6 and 8 generations…while the dogs improved as hunting dogs the litters became smaller…some would hunt themselves to death…not sure if it was heat related or inbreeding related…

I’ve read quite a bit on line breeding and inbreeding and fertility drops quite a bit as inbreeding progresses through the generations as well as many other genetic weaknesses will pop up along the way…the term used to be genetic depression when this happened and hybrid vigor when outcrossing one of these dogs with an unrelated dog…the improvement happens in one generation…

So in this case…it is possible that each dog bred to the female is inbred and very related to her, or the dogs are already so inbred that they already suffer from too much inbreeding…again just my personal thoughts on some possibilities…
