training my pup
feel free to add any advice...
i caught a coon last night so i took him to show my pup. he is out of x jr and balls stylish harry and few others in his 4th gen. he is 5 mos old but i was curious to see. i first just turned him out and he didnt care for that mean thing in the trap so he went to play and thats fine with me, so i let out my 3 legged cur and 2 yr old female walker and they went to town on it. i let them bay it for about 5 mins then i hung it in the tree and they treed for about 5 mins and my puppy still didnt care for what was going on so i put him in the pen and praised the other dogs. well my pup hated that crap so he started raising cain. i put the dogs up and drug the cage and coon about 60 yds into the woods and hung him about 10 ft off the ground. i let the dogs out and the cur treed right off the bat followed by the female. i went in to find the pup running around smelling everything but not at the tree. i waited a while and finally he went to the tree but didnt bark. i let the coon down and then he barked a little. i decided to put them up while they still wanted the coon so i started dragging it back to the yard. this is whn my pup came unglued, he barked every breath back to the house, so i hug it in a tree in the yard he they all treed on it for a few mins. i put the cur up first and the others kept treeing, then i put the female up and my pup kept treeing so i let him tree for another few mins before i caught him and put him up.
now, i think i will do this a few times throughout the week and let the coon go next weekend in a field and let my pup run and hopefully tree it, i will take the female just incase he gets confused. what would yall do different? this is the first coon my puppy has seen besides the one we shot out to a blue dog last night. he dont stay at my feet in the woods he goes hunting but h dont know what to do yet. the female is the same as the male but she is 2 yr old. thanks for reading. i will updat as i go so maybe someone like me can have something to go by.
Cage coon
I have seen dogs ruined by too many cage coons so don't over do it on the cage coons and when you turn the coon out make sure he can't see it otherwise he will get use to seeing a cage coon in a tree, and when he gets good at running a track and trees and doesn't see the cage coon he my not tree..
