Vickie Lamb
Vickie, just bought your book last week and I got into it pretty good so I finished reading it in a couple of days.
I am now going back and highlighting some of the early training that you start with. ex. play come / here, coon tail etc.
Now I have been coon hunting pretty steady for 18 years and have had some type of hound all my life. I have raised and trained two Grand Nites and a couple of Nite CHs.
I never have really had a hound that would mind very well, I never spent alot of yard time with them just a caged coon every now and then and alot of woods time.
I currently have a three month old black and tan female that is Northern Rocket bred that I would like to mold into the type of hound that minds me very well and is also a coon dog. I know that all of them do not make it but she is showing signs of being highly intelligent.
She already seems to know her name and comes to me in the yard when I call her, I say Candy "Here", she has also been exposed to squirrels tails and she gives our cat a fit in the yard.
I am a high school history teacher/softball coach and there is something I would like for you to do for me if you have time. If you could, would you post some time frames that you think that a dog should be able to comprehend some of these commands at what age.
What I would really like is some kind of a chart (that is the teacher in me coming out) that would give age then ability level. For example "here" 4-6 months? or "sit" 3-5 months? Also when has been your best time for the introduction of caged coons? Mine have been from 6-10 months old depending on the maturity of the dog. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
David,
Interesting question.
How's the little one liking the new puppy? It hasn't worn off yet has it?
