Is 10 months to young to be put in a night hunt?????

Just wondering guys some say yes some say no

Depends on the hound

Just remember with young dogs they can pick up bad habits fast. Puting a dog in the hunts at a young age you are gambling with what he is going to hunt with. Trash runners, leaving tree's, or aggresive dogs at the tree. with young hounds it only takes 1 time for something bad to happen to ruin what you have done to get a hound to your liking. So with that said it is up to you on hunting in the hunts or not. Myself I like to get a little age on a hound before entering them in a hunt.. Dont be in any hurry is all I can say if you got a hound he will title just as well at 1 or 2 as he would at the age you are asking. Hunt him hard and alone to build up his confidence as well as exsperience.. GOOD LUCK

I am positive I have in the past ruined some of the best young dogs I ever had by entering them in the hunts to soon. I was much younger and so proud of how they started that I just could not wait to show them off. For me I found it was a big mistake. I like how it is now a little better if you pick and choose the hunts, there are pup derby's which can help you to not put a pup in over his head, but still as was mentioned, you can not control how the others in the cast act and your pup will learn from them.

The only hunt I will put a 10 month old pup in is ?kc baby derby at the ss!!! You are only hunting with pups the same age or younger prettymuch!!! Other than that there is no need !!! Guarantee a pup will not learn one good thing in a cast of dogs but they can pick up more bad habits than you could ever want!!!

I've never had a pup that was turning it on at 10 months old that I didn't see it run into a stupid streak around 2 years old . I've only had maybe 2 or 3 outta a handful that was really top notch at this age but just seems they matured faster and when they hit 2 they took 5 steps back . My advice is to wait at least til over 1 yr of age , for what it's worth ......

I have seen some guys hunt them that young, and some of those dogs it never seemed to bother. Ferrari's Dolly pup was I think 11 months old when my daughter put a 1st on her. That was there call not mine but I will say she was the type that a bad experience wasn't going to sway.


Me, I never enter ANYTHING that isn't what I consider a "finished coondog" and that is NOT going to happen with any 10 month old, regardless of how talented it might be at that age.

Dogs go through changes same as humans. Just about every dog I have owned woke up stupid around 18 months to 24 months old. Its called puberty and yes dogs hit it too. I have seen some that started out well and made night champion by 14 months and then they went through their stupid spell. They will work out of it but it takes patience and work. I use a rule of thumb, that you don't really know what you have until after their second full season. by then you will know if you have a coon dog or a dog that trees coons. This means most dogs will be around 21/2 - 3 years old. Im not saying wait till then to put him in a hunt, but in most cases that's when you really know what you have.

There are a whole lot of bad things that can happen to a pup in a nitehunt and not 1 good thing that I can think of.

SO IN OTHER WORDS ==THR ARE WHAT % OF GOOD DOGS IN THESE HUNTS ?????? IF THE PUP PICKS UP ALL THESE BAD HABITS

You all make it sound like all dogs that are in the hunts are all crap. You see a few of these hounds but not as many as you all seem to think. And the advice to put in a pup hunt, the more pups you put together the more problem you are gonna have. I personally dont like to hunt pups this young in a hunt, simply because they are not ready for the competition...

I would say you got the answer to your Question...NO need for me to say more...

I wouldn't be scared if the pup was off by his/her self an doin it own thing treein coons an was really mature but if you got one that will tree with dogs an acts like a pup you'll just wreck the pup at that age if a dog get alittle rough because your pup might be jumping at the tree an on a dog an it gets a whippin that could be the end of your good pup I had a young one get ate up an he wouldn't tree with another dog after that an when they treed with him the tougher dog was at the tree when we got there an the other was chewed up elsewhere had to put him down an I liked him alot so you definitely have to be careful!!! If your at a local hunt an know the guys dogs an what type of dog they are I'd think you'd be okay you can always withdraw if the dogs seem to be something you don't want your pup with

Like every phase of the training process, you have to control the situation. There is no one that loves to see a pup doing it's thing more than me, and there aren't many that start them as young as I do. I just watch them close and let them tell me what they want to do and need. Nothing wrong with starting one very young and then laying it up if things aren't going as planned. As far as hunts, there is nothing wrong with seeing what a young dog can do, if you know what dogs it will probably draw out with. That would be like hunting it with one of yours. If you plan on taking a very young dog to a strange club and throwing it out there with dogs you don't know, then I am afraid you made some bad plans. I hunt a young one enough to wins its $100 bucks for PKC Super Stakes and maybe try it in one or two very local UKC hunts. Even if it won every hunt you put it in, you should be careful when they are young and I consider young to about 18 months of age or even 2 years for some pups. These are not dogs doing nothing but ones that can tree their own coon and still young in age and can be ruined by a trash runner, ill dog, or tree jumper.

Here is something to think about...if you take a pup like that out for some exercise with litter mates or another young dog does he run around and play a lot?? Does he like to play bite at the other dogs and chase them?? If the answer is yes than I would say take caution to nite hunts with a puppy. This is the number one way to get a young dog ruined. The bad part is that often the dog that jumps on him and gives teeth might not do it with a pup that don't like to play like that.
When it comes to placing any puppy or young dog with strange dogs where you cant be right there to stop something {in most cases even if you can be right there it's still not a good idea} it is never a good idea. Why place a young dog in that position??? Some of the best advice I have ever received regarding dogs in general is "let a puppy be a puppy until he is done."

I have hauled a couple young ones, i always go with the attitude that if i hear or see anything i dont like on the first drop i can withdraw and dont hesitate to do so.
