Caged coon and pup

Okay boys I got a 17 month old blue dog that'll get in there and tree with my old dog but I haven't messed with him by himself much. I got this cage coon and I was wondering how I should do it. If I should let him see it or not?

Has the coon had any kittens yet? Or is it a bore coon?

Let him see it and smell it real good then get him where he can't see it. Go to a field and cut it loose. Then get him out and put him on the track. Give the coon time to get away. Do this in the day time so you can see where the coon goes. Then see if he can track it and tree it some where. This time of year don't let him kill the coon just in case it has pups some where. If you can cut it loose real close to where you caught it that way it can go back to its home.

I must not understand. You have a dog that 'will get in there and tree with my old dog' but you are worried about him not knowing what to do on a turn out coon? . Something does not seem right. Not being smart, I just don't understand.

Well I just bought this dog. Took him hunting once. He didn't bark on track much and he was coming off the tree alot and I wanted to see what he would do by himself. I turned the coon out and he barked on trail alot and still got off tree. That's what I wanted to see

I understand what you're saying, I agree with taking it back where you caught it and wetting it down and turning it loose in a field. I wouldnt let him see it. wouldnt knock it out, let him or her reproduce. Be sure to pet the dog up really good if the coon is treed by the dog. Don't let the dog catch the coon on the ground. Good Luck!!

thats why i say let him see it,my dog will leave the tree some to. but if she shes it she aint going any where and will hammer the tree hard. not sure why that is but i think its just a lack of confidince. you get a bunch of easy coon under him and i think he will start to get it right on his own. that where im at right now and its seeming to work.

makes the sent stronger. easyer to track.

y is that ?

Posted by michigancooner on 04-06-2012 02:22 AM:

Think of a wet dog. Most dogs stink like hell when they are wet, and the same is true for a coon. You yourself will be able to smell that stinky coon after you have doused it in water. If you have a young hound just starting out, it will make that coon track easier to run and also leave a stronger scent on the tree it climbs. And for a young dog just starting out, that is the key. Start nice and easy and build they're confidence up. Good luck.

hahaha idk bout that. never wanted to get close enuf to a city coon to find out. the city ones will shoot you before you shoot them!

do not let it see the coon . sight and caged coon ruin many more young dogs than what it helps and never shake one out and let them rerun it makes them loose on tree . do it all by scent
